Gehlen Catholic Sweeps First Conference Match Under Coach Goebel

Gehlen Catholic volleyball opened their War Eagle Conference schedule on Tuesday night with a straight set victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The win is the first at home and in conference play for new head coach Dan Goebel. He says it felt good to get the first win of the conference schedule at home.

Some of the miscues from the Jays in the win came from their passing that stuck out to Coach Goebel. He says that was the first of some little mistakes that he noticed throughout the night.

Outside of those mistakes, the Jays looked like typical Gehlen Catholic volleyball. The Jays were led in large part by Miyah Whitehead who recorded double-digit kills and a pair of blocks to move into second all-time on the Gehlen career blocks list. She passed her sister Morgan to climb up the list. Coach Goebel says, when Miyah’s on her game, it’s good news for the rest of his team.

The Jays will have a week break before their next matchup on the road at sixth-ranked Unity Christian. It’s going to be tough for the Jays considering Unity Christian hasn’t lost a conference matchup since 2013. Coach Goebel says his team needs to be solid in serving to have a chance against the Knights.

First serve is scheduled for 7:00 on Tuesday, September 6. KLEM Radio will broadcast the match live on-air and online.
