DES MOINES — The last two remaining Plymouth County teams were eliminated from State title contention Thursday in the Class 1A semifinals at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Defending champion Remsen St. Mary’s lost a 2-0 decision to No. 2 Newman Catholic on a two-hitter by Caden Krantz.  He finished with two hits, two walks and ten strikeouts to improve his season mark to 9-and-1.  Jacob Wesselmann, one of six seniors for the St. Mary’s Hawks, fired a six-hitter with four strikeouts but got no run support and saw his final record slip to 7-and-4.  Both runs scored in the third on RBI doubles by Josh Fitzgerald and Evan Paulus.  Eighth-grader Blaine Harpenau had two of Remsen St. Mary’s three hits.  Mitchell Schiltz had the other hit.  The Hawks close out a 28-and-8 season while the Newman Knights improve to 34-and-8 and will be gunning for their sixth State title Saturday at 11 am.

No. 3 Martensdale-St. Marys brought an end to No. 4 Akron-Westfield’s record-setting baseball season, beating the Westerners 6-1 Thursday in the semifinals to advance to Saturday’s State title game against Newman Catholic.  Brady Gavin, one of three pitchers for the Blue Devils, threw 5 1/3 innings of relief before needing help from Bret Barnett to get the final out of the game.  A bases-loaded walk to Conner Anderson by Barnett forced in the Westerner’s lone run before Barnett got a called third strike on A.J. Nemesio to end the game.  The win went to the Blue Devils starting pitcher Kevin Duncan, who worked the first 1 2/3.  He improves to 11-and-2 for the season.  Brady Gavin finished with ten strikeouts, including fanning the first five he faced.  His strike out of Aaron Allard with the bases loaded in the third ended one of several scoring threats A-W had on the afternoon.  The Westerners stranded 13 base runners while striking out twelve times.  Akron-Westfield outhit Martensdale-St. Marys 8-7 with Nick Jacobs leading the way going 3-for-3.  Brady Gavin and Bret Barnett drove in two runs each for Martensdale-St. Marys.  Dylan Irizarry, who earned the win last Saturday in the quarterfinals despite facing just one batter in the game, started Thursday’s semifinal for Akron-Westfield but lasted only 2 1/3 innings while giving up five hits and three runs to take the loss.  Austin Allard worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run while walking five and striking out two.  Nick Jacobs got the final three outs in the sixth.  The Westerners finish the season at 32-and-3, a new school record.  The Blue Devils improve to 41-and-4 and go after their fifth State title on Saturday at 11 a.m.
