(N-F-L Draft)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Defying NFL custom and at least temporarily creating a quarterback quandary, the Arizona Cardinals led off the NFL draft Thursday night by selecting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, the Heisman Trophy winner.

Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa went to San Francisco as expected.  Bosa is considered the top pass rusher in this group. His older brother, Joey, plays for the Chargers and was the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year. Their father also played in the NFL.

The Jets used the third pick on Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, considered by some scouts the best player in this draft. Not even a starter before 2018, Williams won the Outland Trophy last season.

Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson was taken 8th by the Detroit Lions Thursday.  The 6’5″, 251-pound Hockenson won the John Mackey Award last season and finished his Hawkeye career with 73 pass catches for 1,080 yards.

In a N-F-L draft first, two tight ends from the same school have been selected.  The Denver Broncos picked Iowa’s other tight end standout, Noah Fant with the 20th pick.

BOSTON (AP) – NBA Hall of Famer and Boston Celtics great John Havlicek has died in Jupiter, Florida, at age 79.  Havlicek went on to win eight NBA championships and an NBA Finals MVP with Boston, while holding Celtics career records for points scored and games played. His steal of Hal Greer’s inbounds pass in the final seconds of the 1965 Eastern Conference finals against the Philadelphia 76ers remains one of the most famous plays in NBA history.  He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History and enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.  The cause of death wasn’t immediately available. The Boston Globe said he had Parkinson’s disease

Leonard matched his career-best scoring total for any game, set Jan. 1 against Utah. Artemi Panarin set up the winner after scoring twice in the second period, tying the game each time. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots and was perfect after David Pastrnak beat him 2:01 into the second.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Roope Hintz scored twice to support Ben Bishop’s 32-save performance as the Dallas Stars topped the St. Louis Blues, 4-2 to even the Stanley Cup second-round series at a game apiece. SUNDAY RESULTS – April 28

AP-SportsMinute

UNDATED (AP) – The Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics have opened their respective NBA conference semifinal series with victories. Kevin Durant poured in 35 points and Draymond Green almost had a triple-double to help the Warriors post a 104-100 win over the Houston Rockets. Kyrie Irving finished with 26 points and 11 assists, while Al Horford chipped in 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Celtics blew out the Bucks, 112-90 in Milwaukee.

UNDATED (AP) – The Carolina Hurricanes have a two-games-to-none lead in their NHL second-round series, while the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks are deadlocked at a game apiece. Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter scored in the first 65 seconds of the third period to send the Hurricanes past the New York Islanders, 2-1. Tyson Barrie scored the tiebreaking goal and had two assists as the Avalanche downed the Sharks, 4-3.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The New York Yankees lost two more players to injuries when second baseman DJ LeMahieu and third baseman Gio Urshela left yesterday’s game against San Francisco. LeMahieu was removed in the bottom of the third because of right knee inflammation, and Urshela left after he was hit on his left hand by an 88.5 mph cutter from Nick Vincent in the fifth inning. New York has had 15 players on the injured list this year and just two have come back: Gary Sanchez and pitcher CC Sabathia.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Chevrolet completed a sweep of the top two spots at yesterday’s NASCAR Cup race at Talladega. Chase Elliott took the lead shortly after a restart with four laps to go and worked with three other Chevy drivers to hold off the rest of the field. Hendrick teammate Ryan Bowman was second, followed by rookies Ryan Preece and Daniel Hemric.

AVONDALE, La. (AP) – Ryan Palmer and Jon Rahm shot a 3-under 69 in the alternate-shot final round of the Zurich Classic and won the PGA Tour’s only team event by three strokes over Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood. The 42-year-old Palmer won for the first time since 2010. The 24-year-old Rahm has won once in each of the past three seasons and has seven top-10 finishes in 2019.
