FRIDAY RESULTS – August 24

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs opened the Gabe Tardive coaching era with a 43-6 victory over Sioux Center Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field. The Bulldogs opened the game by recovering an on-side kick-off and scored three plays later on a 39-yard touchdown run by Travis Kinney. Special teams struck gold a couple more times Friday night, recovering a fumble on a Sioux Center punt return late in the first quarter that led to a nine-yard TD pass from Levi TeBrink-to-Joey Husk and Gabe Rahn opened the second half with an 89-yard kick-off return for a touchdown. Travis Kinney capped a nine-play, 72-yard second quarter drive with a one-yard touchdown run and Levi TeBrink connected with Brennen Buss on a 13-yard scoring pass with 32-seconds to play before halftime. Conner Delfs added a 36-yard field goal with 1:50 to play before halftime as the Bulldogs forged a 29-6 lead by intermission. Chris Hiserote completed the Bulldogs scoring with a 15-yard interception return on Sioux Center’s first series of the second half. The lone Warrior touchdown came on a 62-yard return of a Bulldog fumble by Spencer Fritz in the first quarter that trimmed a 13-0 deficit. Le Mars travels to M-O-C/Floyd Valley next Friday night for a 7 o’clock kick-off.

SATURDAY RESULTS – August 25

(SIOUX CITY) — The Hinton Blackhawks scored on three of Gehlen’s five turnovers and rallied to beat the Jays 35-14 Saturday afternoon in the C-N-O-S Classic in Sioux City. The game was the season opener for both. The two long-time rivals battled to a 14-14 tie at halftime in a turnover-marred first half that saw both teams commit three turnovers. Two interceptions for each led to all the points in the first and second quarters. Gehlen junior quarterback Blake Wiltgen fired a five-yard scoring pass to Colton Kneip at the 3:49 mark of the first quarter following a Payton Bouma interception. Wiltgen threw the first of his three interceptions to end the Jays next possession and set up a Morgan Wenzel-to-Jason Vander Kooi four-yard scoring pass that tied the score at 7-all early in the second quarter. Michael Whitehead’s interception led to Gehlen’s second score, a 43-yard scoring pass from Wiltgen-to-Whitehead with 4:58 to play in the first half. Jason Vander Kooi made the first of his two interceptions for the Blackhawks at the Gehlen 16 with 1:57 to play in the first half. And it led to Cole Johnston’s three-yard touchdown run that tied the score at 14-14 with 13-seconds to play before halftime. It was all Hinton in the second half as the Blackhawks scored on their first three possessions after the break. Morgan Wenzel gave the Blackhawks their first lead of the day on an eight-yard run midway through the third quarter to cap a nine-play, 48-yard drive. Wenzel and Vander Kooi hooked up on their second TD pass of the day, a 20-yarder, with 1:16 to play in the third period for a 27-14 lead. A fumble led to the Blackhawks final touchdown, a one-yard run by Cole Siders with 10:36 to play in the game to cap a short 17-yard drive. Wenzel added a two-point conversion for a 21-point lead. Gehlen was limited to just two first downs after halftime by the Blackhawk defense. Hinton travels to South O’Brien Friday night and Gehlen hosts Akron-Westfield in the final non-district games before district play begins in week-three.
