TUESDAY RESULTS – November 27
(high school basketball)
(LE MARS) — The number-eight rated Gehlen Catholic girls overcame a sluggish start to beat Remsen-Union 51-32 Tuesday night in a non-conference basketball match-up at the Reardon Family gym. The victory improves the Lady Jays to 2-and-0. The Rockets led 16-9 after the first quarter before Gehlen rallied to claim a 26-20 lead by halftime as junior Hannah Sitzmann knocked down a pair of three’s to close out the half. Emily Holtgrewe added a three to open the second half for Gehlen and the Lady Jays steadily pulled away after that. Katelin Langel led a balanced Gehlen scoring attack with 16 while Hannah Sitzmann added 12 and Emily Holtgrewe had 11. Brittany Weikel collected ten for the Rockets. The Remsen-Union boys rallied from a 33-27 halftime deficit to beat Gehlen 49-46. The Rockets out scored Gehlen 7-1 in the third quarter as the Jays missed all ten of their field goal attempts to send the two teams to the fourth quarter tied at 34-all. Tanner Hilbrands scored seven points during a 10-0 fourth quarter run by R-U that put the Rockets in front 48-40 with 3:40 to play and Remsen-Union never trailed again. The Jays did pull to within two with 1:39 left but never scored again. The 13-point second half by Gehlen can be blamed in part to the four overtime game at Trinity Christian the night before as the Jays’ energy level couldn’t match that of a fresher Rockets’ defensive effort. Hilbrands finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. Nick Braun added 11 for R-U. Blake Wiltgen had 13 for Gehlen while Michael Whitehead was held to eight after collecting 32 Monday night against Trinity Christian. The Jays fall to 1-and-1 for the season. The Gehlen guys and gals play at Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Friday night.
(ORANGE CITY) — The Le Mars boys opened the 2012-2013 basketball season with a 61-53 win over Unity Christian Tuesday night in Orange City. Gabe Rahn had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring while Jake Irwin added 14. Trevor Kauk had 15 for Unity Christian and Logan Schoonhoven added 12. Le Mars led 28-24 at halftime and opened up a ten-point lead by the end of the third quarter. Unity Christian kept the Le Mars girls winless after two games with a 62-53 win over the Lady Bulldogs. The Knights broke away from a one-point halftime lead. Molly Renken had 10 points for Le Mars with Emily Pick adding nine. Shanell Nieuwendorp had 15 for the Knights, Kassidy De Jong 12 and Jill Schouten 11. Le Mars travels to Spirit Lake Tuesday to open Lakes Conference play.

The Gehlen girls improve to 3-and-0 heading into their conference opening game Tuesday at home against Akron-Westfield. The Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn boys blew a 16-point third quarter lead before rallying in overtime to nip Gehlen Catholic 47-46. It was the Jays second overtime game of the week. Gehlen won in four overtimes Monday at Hull over Trinity Christian. Gehlen trailed 39-23 with 18-seconds to play in the third quarter before going on a 17-0 run to take a 40-39 lead with 1:16 to play in regulation. Dylan Speiler connected on one of two foul shots with 31 seconds left to tie the game and send it into another four-minute session. Nate Rassel’s basket in the lane with 50-seconds to play was the fourth and final lead change in overtime and the Eagles held off several Gehlen shot attempts in the final seconds to win by one, ending a 12-game losing streak in the series. Dylan Speiler led M-M-C with a game-high 15 points. Michael Whitehead and Aaron Jentz led Gehlen with 11 each while sophomore Alex Kellen had ten. The loss drops Gehlen to 1-and-2 for the season.
