(high school basketball)
(HINTON) — The No. 3 (2A) Hinton girls opened the second half with a 17-1 run to break up a two-point game at halftime and the Blackhawks improved their record to 14-and-0 with a 66-34 win over 12th-rated (1A) Gehlen Catholic Tuesday night in a non-conference pairing of War Eagle Conference rivals. The victory was the second over the Lady Jays in ten days and marked the 30th straight time that Hinton has beaten the Gehlen girls dating back to the 1998-99 season. Gehlen falls to 10-and-3 with the loss. The Blackhawks led 25-23 at the break but increased their advantage to 19 by the end of the third quarter before winning by 32. Hinton outscored Gehlen 41-11 in the second half. Lauren Hedlund led a balanced Blackhawk scoring attack with 18 while Shaeler Lund added 16, Kailey Burke 11, and Alex Yoerger 10. Hannah Sitzmann finished with 14 points for Gehlen. She had 12 of those 14 points in the first half to keep Gehlen close, notching four three-pointers, but was held to a pair of free throws in the second half. Morgan Whitehead added nine for the Lady Jays.
The top-ranked (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys rolled to their 14th win without a loss, beating Hinton 73-51 with four Jays hitting in double figures. Blake Wiltgen led the way with 14 points, Alex Kellen and Ryan Stoll had 13 each and Jared Steffes added 11. Solomon Freking and Colton Kneip had eight each for Gehlen. Hinton falls to 9-and-6 for the season and were led in scoring by Logan Jurgensmeier with ten. The Blackhawks rallied from a 20-point third quarter deficit to within eight with 7:41 to play before Gehlen used a 9-1 run to go back in front by 16 with five minutes to play. The Jays were never seriously threatened again. Gehlen outscored Hinton 18-4 from the free throw line and despite missing 16 foul shot attempts, Gehlen took 34 attempts from the charity stripe compared to just 7 for the Blackhawks.
Gehlen travels to Unity Christian Friday while Hinton plays at Remsen-Union Friday and hosts Trinity Christian Saturday.
(EMMETSBURG) —Emmetsburg outscored the Le Mars girls 17-5 in the fourth quarter Tuesday night and rallied to beat Le Mars 48-38 in a Lakes Conference match-up in Emmetsburg. The Lady Bulldogs led by one at the half and by two entering the final quarter before falling to 3-and-10 for the season and 3-and-5 in conference play. Holly Schneider returned to the Le Mars line-up after missing last Friday’s game with a concussion and led the Lady Bulldogs’ scoring with 17 points. Kassidy Rieken had 12. Bailey Naig had 16 for the E-Hawks and Alexa Naig added 12.
The Le Mars boys won a hard-fought defensive battle with Emmetsburg, 56-40 Tuesday night, improving their record to 9-and-3 for the season and 7-and-1 in Lakes Conference play. The Bulldogs led by seven at halftime. Tyler Borchers led the way to victory with 20 points for Le Mars with Colan Borchers adding 12 and Jake Irwin 11. Thomas Schultes had 11 for the E-Hawks.
Le Mars travels to Hull Friday night to meet Western Christian in a key Lakes Conference match-up. The games will be carried on KLEM.

(HULL) — Top-rated Western Christian all but wrapped up the Lakes Conference boys championship Friday night, beating Le Mars 72-51 to open up a two-game lead in the league race. The victory keeps the Wolfpack unbeaten at 13-and-0 for the season and improves their Lakes Conference record to 9-and-0. Western erased a 9-6 deficit midway through the first quarter with a 20-2 run to open a 17-point lead with six minutes to play in the first half. Le Mars battled back to within seven with 1:50 to play in the second quarter and trailed by eleven at the break. But the Wolfpack left little doubt about the outcome when they opened the second half with a 15-2 run and outscored Le Mars 19-4 in the third quarter for a 26-point lead going into the final quarter. 6’6″ Josh VanLingen and 6’7″ Taylor Feenstra scored all 19 of Western’s third quarter points to give the Wolfpack control in the paint. As a result Western connected on 56% of their second half shots. Feenstra finished with 21 and VanLingen 20 to lead the Wolfpack in scoring with Kyle Fopma adding 14 and sophomore sharp-shooter, Taylor Miedema adding 10. Tyler Borchers led Le Mars with 16, 13 of those coming before halftime. Tyler Paulson had 10 for the Bulldogs and Caleb Cline nine. Jake Irwin was held to 7, eleven under his average. Le Mars falls to 9-and-4 for the season and 7-and-2 in league play.
The No. 1 (2A) Western Christian girls rolled to a 69-40 win over Le Mars Friday, building a 25-point lead by halftime. The victory keeps the Wolfpack spotless in the Lakes Conference at 9-and-0 and improves their season record to 14-and-1. Balanced scoring has been a trademark for Western this season and Friday night was no exception. Jamie Gesink had 15, Kenzie Bousema 14, Erica Douma 12 and Summer Jansen 10. Western clamped down defensively on Le Mars’ three-point shooters, holding the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Holly Schneider, to eight points and Emily Ahlers to two. That opened the inside up for Kassidy Rieken to have a career night with 23 points for Le Mars. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 3-and-11 for the season and 3-and-6 in the Lakes Conference. They have dropped four in a row.
Le Mars returns to action Tuesday when they host Spencer. The twinbill will be carried on KLEM.
(ORANGE CITY) — Top-rated (1A) Gehlen Catholic had little trouble clearing a major hurdle in their quest for the schools first unbeaten boys basketball season. The Jays steam-rolled to a 26-point halftime lead and beat Unity Christian 76-55 in War Eagle Conference basketball action in Orange City Friday night. The Jays improve to 15-and-0 on the season and now have sole possession of first place in the War Eagle Conference race at 7-and-0. The loss drops the Knights to 7-and-8 for the season and 7-and-1 in the W-E-C. Balanced scoring was again the feature for Gehlen. Solomon Freking led the way with 17, Alex Kellen and Blake Wiltgen scored 15 each and Colton Kneip added 13. Connor Hoekstra had 14 for Unity Christian.
The sixth-rated (3A) Unity Christian girls sprinted to a 15-point halftime lead and outscored No. 13 (1A) Gehlen Catholic 38-16 in the second half to overwhelm the Lady Jays 69-32 in War Eagle Conference basketball action Friday. The loss was the worst of the season for Gehlen and comes on the heels of a 32-point setback Tuesday at Hinton. Chanda Zomermaand had 17 points to lead the Lady Knights in scoring with Kassidy DeJong adding 13. Caitlin Murphy had 16 of Gehlen’s 32 points. The Lady Jays’ leading scorer, Hannah Sitzmann, was checked to just two points Friday night. The loss drops Gehlen Catholic to 10-and-4 for the season and 4-and-3 in the W-E-C.
Gehlen returns to action Monday night with a home game against Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto. The doubleheader will be carried on KLEM.
