(LE MARS) — No. 2 (1A) Gehlen Catholic dropped in three free throws, two by Ryan Stoll and one by Solomon Freking, in the final 16 seconds of the game to lead the Jays past No. 10 (2A) Hinton 75-71 Tuesday night in Le Mars. The Blackhawks battled back from a 15-point first half deficit to close to within three points with 16.2 seconds to play. Stoll hit both free throws to make it a 5-point game and Freking made one of two foul shots with 2.8 seconds left to make it 75-68. Hinton’s Jay Small hit a three-pointer just inside the half court line at the buzzer to narrow the final difference to four. Solomon Freking had 23 points for the Jays with Alex Kellen adding 22 and Ryan Stoll and Jarod Steffes 13 each. Jay Small and Colton Schau had 21 each for the Blackhawks. Eric Brown added 12. Hinton falls to 4-and-2 with their second loss in as many nights and 2-and-1 in the War Eagle Conference. Gehlen Catholic improves to 7-and-0 for the season and 3-and-0 in the league race.
The Hinton girls ran their record to 7-and-0 with a 53-40 win over the Gehlen Catholic girls. It was the 32nd consecutive win in the series for the Blackhawk ladies. Hinton is now 3-and-0 in the W-E-C. The Blackhaws led wire-to-wire and had a 23-point advantage in the third quarter. Kailey Burke had 23 to lead Hinton with Abby Cook adding 12. Morgan Whitehead and Carli Murphy had 10 each for Gehlen, who falls to 2-and-5 for the season and 1-and-2 in the War Eagle Conference.
Gehlen travels to Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Friday while Hinton goes to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. It will be the final games before the Christmas break for both schools.
(LE MARS) — Le Mars swept a Lakes Conference doubleheader from Spencer Tuesday night in Le Mars. The Le Mars girls won their second straight game, 58-33, to improve to 2-and-4 for the season and 1-and-2 in the Lakes Conference. Kassidy Rieken had a season-high 21 points for Le Mars while Jen Schneider added 10. The Lady Bulldogs led by just seven at halftime but outscored the Tigers 34-16 over the final two quarters to pull away.
The Le Mars boys returned to the win column with a 71-49 victory Tuesday. Like the girls, the Le Mars boys pulled away after halftime, outscoring Spencer 37-23 in the second half to improve to 4-and-1 for the season and 3-and-0 in the Lakes Conference. Tyler Borchers led the Bulldogs with 24 points and Trent Hilbrands added 18.
Le Mars wraps up their four-game homestand Friday against Cherokee. It will mark the last game before Christmas for the Le Mars boys while the Le Mars girls close out their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night at Sioux Center.

MARCUS — The Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn girls and the Gehlen Catholic boys picked up relatively easy wins in their War Eagle Conference doubleheader in Marcus Friday night. M-M-C ran off the first 16 points of the second quarter to take a 21-point lead into halftime and the Eagles beat the Gehlen Catholic girls 59-36 to sweep the two-game series for the season. Gehlen head coach Marty Kurth is probably wishing that Santa leaves a couple of sharp-shooting, offensive-minded basketball players under the tree Christmas morning. The Lady Jays have struggled offensive through their first eight games, hitting just 23% of their shots Friday night to fall to 2-and-6 for the season and 1-and-3 in War Eagle Conference play. For the season, Gehlen is shooting 29% from the floor and just 40% from the foul line while averaging just 34.7 points-per-game. Sarah Dreckman led M-M-C with 19 points with Ashley Hurd adding 13 and Alison Meehan 12. Morgan Whitehead had 10 points for the Lady Jays and Grace Auchstetter added nine, all in the fourth quarter. The Eagles are 6-and-1 for the season and 3-and-1 in league play.
The No. 2 (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys started slow, falling behind by 13-7 four minutes into the first quarter, before the Jays tightened up the defense to finish the first half on a 36-14 run and Gehlen rolled to a 76-45 win over Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Friday night. The Jays hit the holiday break with an 8-and-0 record and lead the War Eagle Conference with a 4-and-0 record. Gehlen connected on 11 three-point buckets against the Eagles while hitting 53% of their shots. Ryan Stoll hit three of the three-pointers and led a balanced Gehlen scoring attack with 17 points. Jarod Steffes had his best game of the season to date with 16 while Solomon Freking added 15 and Carson Kneip 10. Jacob Spieler led the Eagles with 17. M-M-C falls to 0-and-6 and 0-and-4 in the W-E-C.
Gehlen returns to action again January 6th at Akron-Westfield. Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn hosts Remsen-Union Monday before their holiday break begins.
LE MARS —Le Mars closed out their four-game home stand with a Lakes Conference sweep of Cherokee Friday night. The Le Mars girls edged the Braves 54-52 for their third straight victory as the Lady Bulldogs improve to 3-and-4 for the season and even their league mark at 2-and-2. Emily Ahlers’ three-pointer at the buzzer lifted Le Mars to the victory over the No. 14 (3A) Braves as Le Mars rallied from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit. The Schneider sisters led the Lady Dogs in scoring, combining for 32 points with Holly netting 17 and her freshman sister Jen 15. Kassidy Rieken added 11 for Le Mars. Kaely Hummel led all scorers with 24 for Cherokee. Le Mars closes out their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night at Sioux Center.
The Le Mars boys had little trouble with winless Cherokee in their half of the double dip, winning 69-29 as the Bulldogs hit the holiday break with a 5-and-1 mark and a league best 4-and-0 mark in the Lakes Conference. Le Mars led 17-2 after the first quarter and 45-17 by halftime before playing the starters sparingly in the second half. Tyler Borchers led the Dogs in scoring with 16 with Mitch Sitzmann adding 12 on four three’s, Tyler Paulsen had 11 and Will Pottebaum 10. Adam Cedar had 11 for the Braves, who slip to 0-and-6 at the break.
Le Mars plays at Bishop Heelan on Saturday January 3rd for their first girl/boy doubleheader of the New Year.

Le Mars finished 8th with 74 1/2 points at the Fort Dodge Invitational Saturday. Fort Dodge won the team title with 219 points with Sioux City East claiming 5th with 143. Le Mars had one champion, Nic Madsen won the 138-pound title with an 8-7 win in the championship match.

SIOUX CENTER — Jill VanderPlaats scored 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as No. 5 (3A) Sioux Center turned back Le Mars 65-51 in girls high school basketball action Saturday evening in Sioux Center. The loss halts a three-game winning streak for the Lady Bulldogs and sends them into the holiday break with a 3-and-5 record. Sioux Center improves to 7-and-1. The Warriors led the entire game, pushing the lead to 19 in the third quarter. Le Mars did close to within 11 in the fourth quarter at one point. Jordyn VanMaanen had 14 for the Warriors and Jessica Harald added 13 off the bench. Kassidy Rieken led Le Mars with 17 points and Kacey Hovden added a season-best 9 on three treys. Le Mars returns to action in two weeks on Saturday January 3rd against state-rated Bishop Heelan at the ‘Pit’.
