MIAMI – Paxton Lynch threw for four touchdowns and ran for three more as Memphis outlasted BYU 55-48 in double-overtime. Lynch put Memphis ahead for good with a scoring pass to Roderick Proctor as the Tigers finished the year 10-3, their first 10-win season since 1938. Tigers kicker Jake Elliott made a 54-yard field goal to force the second overtime.

CINCINNATI – Peyton Manning threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns, but he was intercepted four times in Denver’s 37-28 loss to Cincinnati. Dre Kirkpatrick picked off two Manning throws, returning the first 30 yards for a game-clinching touchdown with 2:41 remaining. Jeremy Hill ran for 147 yards and a long TD as the Bengals clinched a playoff berth and prevented the Broncos from wrapping up a first-round bye.

LE MARS — Death claimed longtime Le Mars Community boys track coach Don Shilling over the Christmas holiday. Shilling, 73, died Wednesday evening at Floyd Valley Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. He’ll always be remembered as the most successful boys track coach in L-C-H-S history but he also coached cross country for several seasons and was the assistant boys basketball coached for more than a decade in the 70’s and early 80’s. He guided many athletes to the State track meet and had several relay teams and individual athletes place on the ‘Big Blue Oval’ in Des Moines. Shilling taught P-E at Le Mars for many years before his retirement from teaching just a few years ago.

UNDATED – Southern California earned a bowl victory despite blowing a 45-27 lead.
The Trojans won the Holiday Bowl as Cody Kessler threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-42 triumph over 25th-rated Nebraska. Kessler tossed a 71-yard TD pass to Adoree’ Jackson, who also scored on a 98-yard kickoff return.
The Trojans secured the victory by stopping De’Mornay Pierson on fourth-and-3 from the USC 31 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

No. 15 Arizona State was a 36-31 winner over Duke in the Sun Bowl as Kalen Ballage returned a kickoff 95 yards to set up Demario Richard’s fourth touchdown of the game with under five minutes to go. Ballage’s big return came after 9-4 Duke took a 31-30 lead on receiver Jamison Crowder’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Blakeney with 5:03 left. Richard tied a Sun Bowl record with 24 points for the 10-3 Sun Devils.
J.C. Coleman ran for 157 yards and a touchdown to help Virginia Tech beat Cincinnati 33-17 in the Military Bowl, giving the Hokies their 22nd consecutive winning season. Michael Brewer went 14 for 24 for 94 yards and a touchdown to guide the Hokies to their highest point total since a 34-17 win at North Carolina on Oct. 4. The 9-4 Bearcats ended a seven-game winning streak.
In a battle of 6-6 teams, South Carolina beat Miami 24-21 in the Independence Bowl. Dylan Thompson threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score. Pharoh Cooper was Thompson’s favorite target, catching nine passes for 170 yards.
Christian Hackenberg hit Kyle Carter for a 10-yard touchdown pass in overtime before Sam Ficken hit an extra point to give Penn State a 31-30 victory over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Nittany Lions managed to win after Eagles kicker Mike Knoll shanked an extra point in OT. Both teams finished 7-6.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective.
Top-ranked Kentucky is 13-0 after Tyler Ulis scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half of a 58-50 win over No. 4 Louisville.
Fellow freshmen Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker also contributed to help stake Kentucky to a 50-38 lead with 4:43 left. Towns had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Booker added nine points.
