ESTHERVILLE — The second-rated (3A) Le Mars Bulldogs continue to close in on a Lakes Conference boys basketball title with an 87-66 win at Estherville/Lincoln Central Tuesday night. Three Bulldog starters scored over 20 points — Tyler Borchers had a season-best 26 to lead Le Mars with Trent Hilbrands and Tyler Paulson adding 21 each. Caleb Cline dropped in 14. Le Mars improves to 14-and-2 on the season and 11-and-1 in conference play, keeping the Dogs a game ahead of Western Christian and Spirit Lake with two league games to play.
The Le Mars girls continued their second half resurgence with a 53-39 win over E-L-C. Holly Schneider and Kassidy Rieken tallied 16 points each to lead the Lady Bulldogs to their 10th win in the last 14 games. Le Mars improves to 10-and-8 for the season and 8-and-4 in the Lakes Conference, good for a second place tie with state-rated Spirit Lake.
The Le Mars boys host Sioux City East in a j-v/varsity doubleheader Thursday night at the Bulldogs’ new gym before Storm Lake rolls into Le Mars Friday night for Lakes Conference play. Thursday’s boys game with East will be carried on KLEM.
HULL — For the second straight Tuesday night, state-rated Gehlen Catholic had to go to overtime to earn a boys basketball win. The number seven (1A) Jays beat Trinity Christian 50-44 in double overtime at Hull to get back into the win column and improve to 16-and-1. Gehlen beat West Sioux in overtime last Tuesday before suffering their first regular season loss in two years Friday night at South O’Brien. Seniors Alex Kellen and Ryan Stoll led the way to victory with 15 and 11 points respectively.
Morgan Whitehead led the Gehlen Catholic girls to their second win in a row with 18 points as the Lady Jays won a hard-fought 48-40 victory at Trinity Christian Tuesday night in a non-conference match-up. Carli Murphy and Jolee Linden added nine points each and Murphy pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lady Jays. Gehlen is now 7-and-11 for the season.
Gehlen hosts Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday night at the Leroy Kellen gym. The War Eagle Conference doubleheader will be carried on KLEM.

LE MARS — Sioux City East took advantage of a cold shooting fourth quarter by the Le Mars boys basketball team Thursday night to take a 60-51 decision in a non-conference match-up at the new Le Mars gym. Tyler Borchers opened the fourth quarter with a field goal for the Bulldogs to forge a 46-all tie with 7:36 to play. That would be the final field goal of the game for the Dogs as they missed their final 11 shots from the floor to finish 1-for-12 in the final eight minutes and were outscored 14-7 by the Black Raiders. Borchers finished with a game-high 21 points for Le Mars while Tyler Paulson added 14, but only two after halftime. Trent Hilbrands, who averages 12 points a game, was limited to one field goal and two points. Andre Harris led a balanced East scoring attack with 14 with Alex Stueve adding 13 and Austin Ahrent 10. The loss drops the second-rated (3A) Bulldogs to 14-and-3 for the season while Sioux City East improves to 17-and-10. Le Mars won the J-V game 57-46 as Will Pottebaum tallied 21 points. Le Mars continues their four-game homestand Friday with Storm Lake rolling into town for a Lakes Conference twinbill.

ANN ARBOR – Jarrod Uthoff had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Iowa scored the final 12 points of the first half en route to a 72-54 victory over Michigan Thursday night.
The Wolverines, playing without injured guards Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton, did not score for the final 6:58 of the half, and the Hawkeyes (14-8, 5-4 Big Ten) led 31-21 at halftime. Mike Gesell finished with 14 points for Iowa, and Aaron White added 13.
Aubrey Dawkins led Michigan with 16 points, but the Wolverines (13-10, 6-5) continue to be plagued by extended scoring droughts. They were held without a point in overtime in a loss at Michigan State on Sunday, and they never really threatened Iowa after the Hawkeyes built a comfortable lead.
It ended up being Michigan’s most lopsided home loss since Dec. 28, 2010, when Purdue beat the Wolverines 80-57 in Ann Arbor.

LE MARS — Regan Shockley ignited a 19-0 run that erased a 15-14 deficit and number-11 (2A) Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rolled to their 13th straight win, 50-24, over Gehlen Catholic Friday night in War Eagle Conference girls basketball action at the LeRoy Kellen gym. Shockley, who moved into the H-M-S school district from Central Lee, Donnellson after last season, helped light a fire under what had been a stagnant Hawks’ offense for much of the first half, scoring ten of her game-high 20 points during the 19-0 run. Taylor Peters hit a pair of free throws for Gehlen with 2:47 to play in the first half to give the Lady Jays a 15-14 lead. That would be Gehlen’s last points for nearly nine minutes until Carli Murphy’s two free throws ended the drought at the 1:35 mark of the third quarter. By then H-M-S had built an 18-point lead. Murphy was the only Lady Jay to hit for double figures, scoring 13. Gehlen’s leading scorer, Morgan Whitehead, was limited to just two points. Gehlen falls to 7-and-12 for the season and 5-and-5 in the W-E-C. H-M-S, which hasn’t loss since December, improves to 18-and-2 for the season and 8-and-2 in league play.
The seventh-rated Gehlen Catholic boys avoided an upset bid by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by outscoring the Hawks 18-5 in the final 4:47 of the game to pull out a 64-55 win Friday. The victory assures the Jays of at least a share of the War Eagle Conference title for 2014-2015 as they improve to 9-and-1 in league play and 17-and-1 for the season. H-M-S led by 13 points with 12 minutes to play before the Jays closed the third quarter with a 15-4 charge that narrowed the deficit to two heading into the fourth quarter. A personal foul coupled with a technical foul at the 4:47 mark of the fourth quarter seemed to be the tipping point in the contest. Gehlen’s Carson Kneip and Ryan Stoll connected on two foul shots each to tie the game at 50-all. That fueled a 10-0 run that put the Jays in front for the first time and they hit enough foul shots down the stretch to avoid the upset. Alex Kellen netted a career high 24 points for Gehlen with Ryan Stoll adding 12 and Lucas Hunt and Jarod Steffes collecting 11 each. 6’6″ Blake Simons had 34 for the Hawks.
The Gehlen boys travel to West Sioux Monday night for a non-conference j-v/varsity doubleheader before the Jays host Akron-Westfield in the final War Eagle Conference doubleheader of the year Tuesday. That will mark the end of the regular season for the Gehlen girls, who open 1A Regional play Thursday at home against Siouxland Community Christian.
LE MARS — The Le Mars guys and gals had little trouble sweeping a Lakes Conference doubleheader from Storm Lake Friday at the Bulldogs’ gym. The Le Mars girls rolled over winless Storm Lake 60-26 while the Le Mars boys pounded the Tornadoes 79-42. The Lady Bulldogs built a 25-6 halftime lead and led 47-15 after three quarters to improve to 11-and-8 for the season and 9-and-4 in the Lakes Conference. Kassidy Rieken and Katrina Engebretson led Le Mars with 13 points each and Holly Schneider added 10.
Tyler Borchers had 25 points, ten rebounds and five blocked shots to pace the Le Mars boys’ 37-point victory. Tyler Paulson added 17 and Trent Hilbrands 16 for the Bulldogs, who improve to 15-and-3 for the season and 12-and-1 in the Lakes Conference. Le Mars has clinched at least a share of the conference title, maintaining a one game lead over Western Christian and Spirit Lake with one more league game to play.
Le Mars hosts Spirit Lake on Tuesday. The girls game will be for second place behind league champion Western Christian. The two are tied at 9-and-4 in Lakes plays. The fourth-rated (3A) Spirit Lake boys will be trying to forge a three-way tie for the Lakes boys title with their second win over Le Mars this season. The Indians beat the Bulldogs by nine last month in Spirit Lake.

IOWA CITY – Aaron White scored 17 points, Adam Woodbury matched a career high with 16 and Iowa throttled 17th-ranked Maryland 71-55 on Sunday.
Peter Jok also matched a career high with 15 points for the Hawkeyes (15-8, 6-4 Big Ten). They opened the game on a 22-3 run and handed the Terrapins their third straight road loss – all by double digits.
The Terrapins (19-5, 7-4) scored just 17 points on 6-of-25 shooting in the first half as Iowa raced out to a 23-point lead. Maryland got within 15 before a technical foul on coach Mark Turgeon with 10 minutes left slowed much of the Terps’ momentum.
