Individually, Akron-Westfield’s Ann Hedlund is tied for 10th with an opening round 91, Akron-Westfield’s Ryleigh Schnell is tied for 13th with a 92, Hannah Sieperda of Central Lyon is tied for 20th with a 97, Bailey Davis and Kourtney Hedlund of Akron-Westfield are tied for 23rd with 98’s, River Valley Christina Martin shot a 99 and is tied for 25th. Kassie Peters of George-Little Rock is 39th after shooting an opening day 106. Sarah McMichael of Nashua-Plainfield leads after day one with a 72.

Alta-Aurelia (342), Emmetsburg (368) and West Monona (372) hold down the top three spots in the team standings after day one with Unity Christian sitting in 8th place. Individually, Samantha Knight of West Monona is the opening day leader with a 79. Jenna Snyder of Alta-Aurelia and Ashton Connelly of Emmetsburg are tied for 2nd with 83’s, Alta-Aurelia’s Erin Lockin is 4th with an 84, Rachel Grenko of Hinton is 5th with an 85 and Unity Christian’s Alyssa Fedders is tied for 6th with an 86.
CLASS 3A STATE MEET AT MARSHALLTOWN
Atlantic is the pace-setter after day one with a 356 with M-O-C/Floyd Valley tied for 5th with a 375. Individualy, Brooke Klosterman of Beckman Catholic shot a 75 to set the early pace. Alex Mankle of Okoboji is tied for 7th with an 87 and Josie Van Roekel of M-O-C/Floyd Valley is 17th with a 90.
CLASS 4A STATE MEET AT MARSHALLTOWN
Washington’s 351 has them on top of the leader board after day one with Storm Lake 8th with a 409. Individually, Sara Nacos of Washington shot a 78 to top the leader board with Lauren Sather of Spencer tied for 23rd with a 94.

Dowling Catholic has a two shot lead on Cedar Falls after day one with Paige Seiser of Waukee and Sonya Shah of Valley sharing the leader board individually after day one with 78’s.

Gehlen Catholic (4-3/2-0) 2, West Sioux 1
(LE MARS) — Taylor Peters and Jolee Linden combined for five of the teams seven hits and drove in both runs to back a three-hitter by Meghen Heying as Gehlen Catholic stayed unbeaten in the War Eagle Conference at 2-and-0 with a 2-1 victory over West Sioux Monday night at the River View Complex. Heying gave up an unearned run in the first on Rylee Negaard’s double but got Negaard on a pop up in her next at-bat to end a threat in the third with runners at second and third. Heying then retired 13 of the final 14 batters. Peters went 3-for-3, delivering a game-tying double off the left-center field fence in the third to tie the game and Linden drove in the go-ahead run with her second single in the fifth. Jill Kessenich scored both Gehlen runs. The Lady Jays are 4-and-3 for the season. They host state-rated Remsen St. Mary’s Tuesday night.

(SERGEANT BLUFF) — Holly Schneider opened the game with a home run but that would be the last of the good news for #3 (4A) Le Mars as the rest of the night belonged to #9 (3A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton as the Warriors dropped Le Mars to 2-and-5 with a 10-1 softball victory Monday night at Sergeant Bluff. S-B-L scored three runs in the bottom of the first, added two more in the fifth before blowing the lid off the game with a five-run fourth inning. Abby Kolar and Terri Detloff combined on a four-hitter for Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Kassidy Rieken and Grace Milbrodt combined to give up 11 hits and six walks. Amber Schubert belted a two-run homer and added a two-run double to lead S-B-L offensively. Le Mars hosts Storm Lake Wednesday night to open Lakes Conference play.

West Sioux 6, Gehlen Catholic (3-1/1-1) 3
(LE MARS) — Porter Hummel and Tucker Vander Feen combined on a three-hitter with 17 strike outs to pitch West Sioux to a 6-3 win over Gehlen Catholic in War Eagle Conference baseball Monday night at the River View Complex. Hummel took a one-hitter into the seventh inning before Gehlen used two hits and a pair of walks to stage a rally that brought them back from a 6-0 deficit to within 6-3 and sent Hummel to the showers with one out and the bases loaded. Vander Feen came on in relief and retired two of Gehlen’s best hitters, Ty Kurth on a strike out and Jarod Steffes on a come-backer to end the game. The Falcons struck for four runs in the first inning against Gehlen starter Morgan Kellen. A two-run homer by Trevor Ericson was the key first inning blow for West Sioux. The game settled into a pitcher’s duel after that. The Jays fall to 3-and-1 for the season and 1-and-1 in the conference with defending W-E-C champion, Remsen St. Mary’s rolling into the River View Complex Tuesday night in a contest that will be carried on KLEM.

(SIOUX CITY) — Keaton Candor and Dayton Rand had three RBI’s each and Trevor Westhoff had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead Le Mars to an 8-5 win at Sioux City West Monday night. Candor had a triple while Westhoff and Rand added doubles to lead a nine-hit attack. Sophomore Trent Hillbrands turned in the first complete game of the season for the Bulldogs, scattering ten hits and striking out 11. He walked only one. Joel Stroman had four hits for the Wolverines. The victory improves the Bulldogs’ record to 2-and-3 heading into a home date Tuesday night with the Nighthawks of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.

1A BOYS STATE TEAM TOURNAMENT AT JOHNSTON
Decorah defeated Le Mars (13-1) 5-0 in the semifinals, handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season. In singles play, Matt Ellefson was leading his match but play was halted before he could complete it. He split his first two sets 6-7, 6-4 and was leading in the third set. Dylan Harms lost 1-6, 2-6, Kyle Marek lost 1-6, 3-6, Thomas Havey lost 1-6, 0-6, Austin Rieken lost 1-6, 6-7, and Jake Thompson lost 6-4, 4-6, 5-7. There were no doubles matches needed.
Le Mars defeated Denison-Schleswig 6-0 for third place. In singles, Matt Ellefson won 6-1, 6-2, Dylan Harms won 6-0, 6-2, Kyle Marek won 7-5, 6-3, Thomas Havey won 6-2, 6-0, Austin Rieken won 6-4, 7-5, and Jake Thompson won 6-4, 6-4. No doubles matches were needed. Le Mars ended the season at 14-and-1.

(LE MARS) — Number-eleven (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s broke up a 1-0 pitcher’s duel with a four-run seventh inning Tuesday night and beat Gehlen Catholic 5-1 in War Eagle Conference softball at the River View Complex in Le Mars. Veda Pick and Bailey Schroeder supplied a pair of two-run singles for the Hawks in the seventh. The Lady Jays scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Jill Kessenich. Alexis Bunkers led an eleven-hit attack for the Lady Hawks with two doubles and a single. Veda Pick and Bailey Schroeder had two hits each. Allie Hansen and Jaci Alesch had two hits each for Gehlen Catholic. Sydney Schorg checked the Lady Jays to six hits and struck out six in gaining the pitching win for St. Mary’s. Meghen Heying took the loss. Gehlen Catholic falls to 4-and-4 for the season and 4-and-1 in the W-E-C. Remsen St. Mary’s improved to 4-and-3 for the season and 2-and-2 in league play. Gehlen travel to Trinity Christian Wednesday while St. Mary’s hosts Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

(LE MARS) — Jacob Wesselman and Colton Clark launched two-run homers to back Elliot Conover’s complete game pitching performance as Remsen St. Mary’s held off Gehlen Catholic 6-5 Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference baseball action at the River View Complex. The Hawks saw a 4-0 lead cut to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Gehlen scored on Noah Livermore’s fielder’s choice and then added a second run on the same play when the Hawks committed a throwing error. Clark’s homer in the top of the seventh extended the lead to 6-2 before two hits and two more Hawk errors led to three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the Jays to narrow the deficit to one. The game ended with runners on first and third for Gehlen. Brady Harpenau had three hits and a RBI for St. Mary’s while Jarod Steffes had two hits for the Jays, including a two-run double in the seventh. Conover scattered seven hits and struck out eight to improve to 2-and-0 for the season while the loss was pinned on Solomon Freking, who was tagged for 12 hits, six for extra bases, and he also struck out eight. Gehlen Catholic falls to 3-and-2 while Remsen St. Mary’s improves to 7-and-0. Gehlen travels to Trinity Christian Wednesday night while St. Mary’s entertains Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

(LE MARS) — A five-run second inning jump-started the Le Mars offense Tuesday night and helped send them to a 9-1 non-conference baseball win over visiting Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. Keaton Candor’s two-run single keyed the big second inning for the Bulldogs. Le Mars then added three more in the third for an early 8-0 advantage. Caleb Cline and Race Streker led an eight-hit attack for Le Mars with two hits each. Caleb Cline, the first of three Le Mars pitchers, earned the win. The Bulldogs improve to 3-and-3 for the season heading into their Lakes Conference opener Wednesday night at home against Storm Lake. The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 7:30.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars rapped out 12 hits and took advantage of five Storm Lake errors to earn a 13-3, six inning Lakes Conference softball win over the Tornados Wednesday night at the Bulldogs Sports Complex. Sidney Baumgartner and Christina Konz had three hits each to lead Le Mars offensively. Baumgartner drove in two runs. Jess Van Otterloo added two hits. Kassidy Rieken tossed a seven-hitter in the pitching circle for Le Mars with one walk and two strike outs. Le Mars improves to 3-and-5 for the season and are now 1-and-0 in the Lakes Conference. The Lady Bulldogs play in the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament Friday and Saturday.

(HULL) — Jill Kessenich’s bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and led to a five-run inning and an eventual 8-5 victory at Trinity Christian Wednesday night in non-conference softball play. Trinity countered with two runs in their half of the eighth. Jaci Alesch and Jolee Linden had two hits each for the Lady Jays. The Gehlen girls improve to 5-and-4 for the season heading into a Thursday night match-up with Hinton at the River View Complex. The game will be carried on KLEM.

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs scored 18 runs and sent 25 batters to the plate in the third inning Wednesday night and went on to open defense of their Lakes Conference title with a 23-1, four inning victory over Storm Lake at the Bulldog Complex. Sophomore Gabe Eckstaine threw a no-hitter for the Bulldogs, walking two and striking out three. He allowed one unearned run. Kyle Kliever led a 13-hit attack with three hits. Dayton Rand drove in five runs, three on a bases-loaded triple in the third inning. Trevor Westhoff had three RBI’s, two on a triple in the third. Keaton Candor walked four times, once with the bases-loaded and scored three runs. The Dogs took advantage of eight Storm Lake errors. Le Mars improves to 4-and-3 and will take a modest three-game winning streak to Emmetsburg Friday.
Gehlen Catholic (4-2) 12, Trinity Christian 0, six innings
(LE MARS) — Ty Kurth and Lucas Hunt combined on a one-hit, 12 strike out pitching performance and Noah Livermore slugged his first home run of the season to carry Gehlen Catholic to a 12-0, six inning victory vs. Trinity Christian Wednesday night in baseball action played at the River View Complex. Trinity did serve as the home team though. The Jays blew the game open with a seven-run sixth inning. Jarod Steffes led a 12-hit Gehlen offensive attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and one RBI. Livermore had a double in addition to his home run and Solomon Freking had a pair of hits and two RBI’s. The Jays improve to 4-and-2 for the season. Gehlen returns to action Friday when they host Hinton in a battle of two State Tournament teams from last summer and then the Jays play in the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Saturday and Sunday.

Le Mars’ Emily Ahlers defeated Dia Huggins of Maharishi 6-2, 7-5 in the first round of the 1A Singles tournament. She then lost to the number two seed, Kate Walker of Red Oak, 4-6, 0-6 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation quarterfinals, Emily defeated Maddie Parker of Camanche 6-0, 6-0. She’ll play in the consolation bracket semifinals Friday morning to determine whether she’ll play in the 5th or 7th place match Friday afternoon.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic built a 9-2 lead before having to hold off a late Hinton rally to win 9-7 Thursday night in War Eagle Conference softball action at the River View Complex. The Lady Jays snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Hinton countered with five runs in the fifth to draw to within 9-7 and left two runners on base in each of the final two innings without scoring. The Blackhawks stranded 13 base runners for the game. Emily Meyer started and got the win but needed Meghen Heying’s relief help to secure the outcome. Heying earned her first save of the season. Jolee Linden had three hits and three RBI’s for Gehlen, Carly Bunkers drove in her first two runs of the season and Jaci Alesch tripled home a run and scored three times. The Blackhawks got four hits from Kelli Gleason to pace a 13-hit attack. Morgan Schoenrock had two hits and two RBI’s. Gehlen also won the JV game on a walk-off double to complete a come-from-behind 12-11 victory. The Gehlen varsity takes a 6-and-4 record to the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Saturday. The Lady Jays are 3-and-0 in the W-E-C. Hinton falls to 0-and-7 and 0-and-3 in league play. They’ll be in the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Le Mars’ senior Emily Ahlers won her consolation semifinal match against Haley Schneiderman of Aplington-Parkersburg 6-3, 6-0 and then claimed fifth place with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hannah Fox of Waverly-Shell Rock. Ahlers went 4-and-1 over her two-day stay at the State tournament.

(SIOUX CITY) — Le Mars split their first two games at the Sioux City West Earlybird tournament Friday, winning 6-3 over Hinton and losing 9-0 to Lawton-Bronson. Kassidy Rieken threw a five-hitter against Hinton and Kalin Hardyk led an eight-hit attack with two hits for the Lady Bulldogs. In the loss to Lawton-Bronson, Lexa Binder three a three-hit shutout with 14 strike outs against the Lady Bulldogs. Christina Konz had two of Le Mars’ three hits and Holly Schneider had a double. Kalin Hardyk and Grace Milbrodt split the pitching chores for Le Mars with Hardyk giving up seven runs in four innings. Le Mars now has a record of 4-and-6 heading into two more games Saturday at the Earlybird tournament with Sioux City East and Sioux City West.

(EMMETSBURG) — Sparked by home runs from Keaton Candor and Dayton Rand, the Le Mars Bulldogs used a three run eighth inning Friday night to win at Emmetsburg 10-7 in Lakes Conference baseball action. The victory improves the defending league champs to 2-and-0 in this year’s league race and 5-and-3 for the season. The Dogs have won four straight heading into a home date Saturday with the Hinton Blackhawks. Rand led the way offensively for Le Mars with a double and homer and three RBI’s. His two-run homer in the eighth snapped a 7-all tie. Rand also earned a save in the game, striking out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth. (LE MARS) — After two seventh inning rallies fell short earlier in the week against West Sioux and Remsen St. Mary’s, the third attempt this week proved to be a charm as Ty Kurth’s two-out, walk-off single lifted Gehlen Catholic to a 5-4 victory over the Hinton Blackhawks Friday night at the River View Complex. The War Eagle Conference game pitted two State tournament qualifiers from last summer against each other. Jarod Steffes threw a complete-game, six-hitter for the Jays, surviving a six walk night. He also led Gehlen’s hitting attack with a pair of RBI singles. The Jays are now 5-and-2 for the season and 2-and-1 in league play while Hinton fell from the ranks of unbeaten, slipping to 7-and-1 for the season and 2-and-1 in the W-E-C. Gehlen Catholic plays in the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Saturday and Sunday and returns to War Eagle Conference play Monday against Harris-Lake Park at Granville’s Vosburg Field. Hinton returns to Le Mars Saturday to meet the Bulldogs in a j-v/varsity twinbill at 5 p.m.

(SIOUX CITY) — Sioux City East beat Le Mars 6-3 Saturday at the Sioux City West Earlybird tournament. Kassidy Rieken drove in two runs for Le Mars and Christina Konz had a RBI double. Kassidy Rieken scattered nine hits in the pitchers circle to take the loss. The second game of the day for the Lady Bulldogs against the host school, Sioux City West, was rained out in the first inning of play.

(CARROLL) — Gehlen Catholic finished sixth at Saturady’s CYO softball tournament in Carroll, winning one of their three games. Gehlen Catholic opened with an 8-6 loss to Bishop Heelan. The Crusaders scored scored three runs in the sixth inning to erase a 6-5 deficit. Heelan took advantage of six errors by the Lady Jays. Jill Kessenich, Jaci Alesch and Paris Schroeder had two each for Gehlen to pace a ten-hit attack Aubrey Wolf had four RBI’s for Heelan. Gehlen Catholic routed Storm Lake St. Mary’s 13-0 in three innings in the consolation semifinals. Melissa Schmit and Paris Schroeder had two hits and two RBI’s each to lead the Lady Jays. Jolee Linden, Taylor Peters and Carly Bunkers also drove in two runs each. Peters slugged her third home run of the season. Emily Meyer threw a three inning two-hitter for the Lady Jays. Gehlen Catholic fell 7-2 to Bishop Garrigan in the fifth place game. Jaci Alesch and Taylor Peters had three hits and one RBI each for the Lady Jays. Gehlen Catholic takes a 7-and-6 record into a War Eagle Conference match-up with Harris-Lake Park Monday in Granville. The Lady Jays are 6-and-1 in the W-E-C.

(CARROLL) — Bishop Garrigan scored five runs over their final two at-bats to pull away from a 6-3 lead and beat Gehlen Catholic 11-3 in the quarterfinal round of the C-Y-O baseball tournament in Carroll Saturday. Morgan Kellen limited the Golden Bears to just six hits but the Jays played their worst game defensively of the season. Jarod Steffes had two hits and a RBI for Gehlen offensively. The Jays fall to 5-and-3 for the season and play in the consolation bracket semifinals Sunday in Carroll.

NEW YORK – American Pharoah has ended horse racing’s Triple Crown drought with a convincing performance in the Belmont Stakes, finishing 5 1/2 lengths ahead of Frosted. American Pharoah was slow to get out of the gate, yet managed to take the lead without ever relinquishing it to one of the other seven horses. The colt is the 12th Triple Crown winner and the first since Affirmed in 1978.

(CARROLL) — Solomon Freking fired a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to pitch Gehlen Catholic to an 8-0 win over Kuemper Catholic Sunday in the C-Y-O baseball tournament at Carroll. Freking also led the Jays at the plate with two hits and three RBI’s. Robbie Gunter added two hits for Gehlen. The Jays scored five runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. The win put Gehlen into the 5th place game but thunderstorms washed out the games late in the day. Gehlen Catholic takes a 6-and-3 record into a Monday War Eagle Conference match-up with Harris-Lake Park at the River View Complex. There were only be a varsity game at 6 p.m.

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron James had a triple-double and the Cleveland Cavaliers evened the NBA Finals at a game apiece by downing the Golden State Warriors 95-93 in overtime. James followed his 44-point performance in the opener with 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists as the Cavaliers won their first game since Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending broken knee cap. Reigning MVP Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry had a miserable shooting night, missing 18 of his 23 attempts and going 2-for-15 from 3-point range while scoring 19 points.
