(LE MARS) — Lindsay Williams checked Le Mars to four hits and struck out six to pitch the Cherokee girls to a 5-2 Lakes Conference softball victory over the Lady Bulldogs Monday night at the Bulldogs Sports Complex. The game was a make-up from a July 1st rain out and closed out the regular season for Le Mars at 13-and-17. Josie Kindwall’s two-run single capped a three-run first inning and the Braves were never headed after that. They added two more in the seventh on an error and a RBI double by Payton Slaughter. Le Mars ended Williams’ shutout bid with a run in the sixth on a passed ball and another in the seventh on Christina Konz’s RBI single. Janessa Milbrodt took the loss despite giving up just six hits. She walked four and struck out nine. Le Mars hosts Bishop Heelan Thursday night at the Bulldog Complex in the 4A Regional quarterfinals. The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 6:50.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic opened 1A Regional tournament play with a 14-6 win over West Sioux Monday night at the River View Complex. The Lady Jays unleashed a 14-hit attack with everyone in the Gehlen line-up getting at least one hit. Taylor Peters led the way with three hits, including a RBI triple to highlight a five-run sixth inning for Gehlen. Jill Kessenich, Jaci Alesch and Melissa Schmit had two RBI’s each. The Falcons rallied from a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the third to tie the score. Gehlen scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 7-4. A two-run homer by the War Eagle Conference’s top home run hitter, Rylee Negaard, drew West Sioux to within 7-6 in the fifth. But again the Lady Jays answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and then added the five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Meghen Heying finished with a six-hitter but walked five. Gehlen takes an 18-and-12 record to Akron Wednesday night for a 1A Regional quarterfinal game against top-rated and two-time defending State champion Akron-Westfield (26-4) at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 6:50.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars jumped on starter Travis Kooima for seven runs in the first two innings and went on to post an 8-6 Lakes Conference baseball win over Western Christian Monday night at the Bulldogs Sports Complex. The Wolfpack scored five runs in the third to close the 7-0 deficit to two and closed the gap to 7-6 with a run in the top of the sixth. Le Mars scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and Preston Vore closed out the victory with a shutout seventh inning to earn a save. Gabe Eckstaine picked up the win, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits with three walks and one strike out. Eckstaine also led the way offensively with three hits and two RBI’s for Le Mars. Keaton Candor added two RBI’s for the Dogs. Le Mars improves to 15-and-12 for the season and finishes 9-and-5 in the Lakes Conference. Le Mars travels to Glenwood Tuesday for a j-v/varsity doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.

(GLENWOOD) — Le Mars rode an early 5-0 lead to a 10-2 win at Glenwood Tuesday night in non-conference baseball play. Keaton Candor had four of the Bulldogs ten hits and drove in three runs. Matt Ellefson added two hits and one RBI. Riley Magnussen threw a complete game seven-hitter with no walks and five strike outs. Both runs were unearned. Le Mars improves to 16-and-12 for the season. They’ll be home Wednesday night against Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

CLASS 1A REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS
(AKRON) — Sophomore Ann Hedlund earned her fourth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of relief and also delivered the clinching two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to extend a 5-3 lead to 7-3 as top-rated Akron-Westfield advanced to the 1A Regional semifinals with a 7-4 win over Gehlen Catholic Wednesday night in Akron. The Lady Jays tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh on Jolee Linden’s two-out double to right center but Hedlund then struck out pinch-hitter Brittany Schmit, ending Gehlen’s season at 18-and-13. The Lady Jays took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on Melissa Schmit’s RBI single and a dropped flyball. The Westerners reclaimed the lead with three runs in the third on RBI’s by Danika Smith and Danika Tindall with a Gehlen error producing another run for a 4-2 advantage. Katie Johnson’s sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 5-2. The Lady Jays pulled to with 5-3 with an unearned run in the fifth before Hedlund doubled up the alley in left center to all but secure the victory for the two-time defending State champs. Bailey Davis worked the first 5 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits and striking out nine to improve her record to 13-and-3. Meghen Heying took loss, giving up ten hits and four walks. She finishes with a record of 13-and-9. Jill Kessenich had three hits to pace Gehlen’s ten-hit attack while Bailey Davis had three hits for the Westerners. Akron-Westfield improves to 27-and-4 for the season and plays Trinity Christian Friday night in Akron in the 1A Regional semifinals at 7 p.m.

(LE MARS) — Sergeant Bluff-Luton held off a seventh inning rally to edge Le Mars 6-5 Wednesday night in regular season baseball action at the Bulldog Complex. The Bulldogs trimmed a 6-4 deficit with a run in the bottom of the seventh after S-B-L had tallied a run in the top of the seventh. Caleb Cline, Preston Vore and Dayton Rand combined on a five-hitter for Le Mars while Spencer Wyatt worked a complete game for the Warriors, scattering seven hits and striking out nine. Kyle Kliever and Dayton Rand had two hits each for the Bulldogs with Rand driving in two runs. Connor Prescott and Alec Davis drove in two runs each for Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Le Mars takes a 16-and-13 record on the road Friday to face number ten (3A) Harlan.

(GRANVILLE) — Senior Jarod Steffes, pitching at Vosburg Field for the final time in his high school career, threw a one-hitter with 14 strike outs to pitch number-ten (1A) Gehlen Catholic to a 5-0 baseball victory over South O’Brien Wednesday night. Morgan Kellen worked the final inning and struck out two more Wolverines for a combined 16 strike outs. At the plate, Roman Freking smacked his third home run of the season and finished with two hits. Solomon Freking and Ty Kurth had two hits each and both had RBI doubles. Lucas Hunt also finished with two hits. Gehlen Catholic will take a 22-and-5 record into their tournament opener next Tuesday against Trinity Christian at 7 pm at the River View Complex west of Le Mars. The game will follow a match-up between Akron-Westfield and South O’Brien at 5 pm.

CLASS 4A REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS
(LE MARS) — What a difference a year made for Lexi Ricke, the sophomore pitcher for Bishop Heelan! Last year as a freshman, Le Mars hit her hard in their 4A Regional semifinal game and sent her to an early exit in a 9-6 Bulldog win. Ricke fired a three-hit shutout with seven strike outs Thursday night in the 4A Regional quarterfinals, allowing just four base runners in a dominant pitching performance that sent the Crusaders to the Regional semifinals with a 3-1 win over Le Mars at the Bulldogs Sports Complex. Heelan scored on a wild pitch in the second inning for an early 1-0 lead. An inning later, Jaylee Lester unloaded a towering two-run homer over the left field scoreboard for a 3-0 advantage. Le Mars avoided being shut out by Ricke, scoring their lone run in the fifth inning. With runners on first and third the Lady Bulldogs attempted a delayed double steal. Sidney Baumgartner was thrown out at second base but on the play Ellie Meade dashed home from third. The Lady Dogs had one more opportunity an inning later when Janessa Milbrodt laced a two-out single to center and last season’s home run leader, Crystal Eppling coming up. Ricke got Eppling to fly out to right to end the inning and Le Mars went down in order in the seventh as their season ended at 13-and-18. Janessa Milbrodt took the loss, scattering eight hits, walking three and striking out five as she finished with a 7-and-7 record in an injury plaqued 2015 season. Bishop Heelan takes a 25-and-11 to Denison-Schleswig Saturday for the semifinals.

(REMSEN) — It was a night to remember for senior Eliiot Conover of the Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team. Conover threw a one-hit shutout in an 11-0 War Eagle Conference win over Unity Christian and clubbed three home runs and drove in nine runs. The Hawks take a 28-and-5 record into their 1A District tournament opener next Tuesday against River Valley at Marv Thelen Memorial Field at 7 pm.

(HARLAN) — Number-ten (3A) Harlan swept a varsity baseball doubleheader from the Le Mars Bulldogs Friday night, 11-1 in five innings and 8-3 to drop the Dogs to 16-and-15 for the season. In the opener, Brett Croghan checked the Bulldogs to three hits and the Cyclones won a ten-run rule verdict with a walk-off in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nick Tarney had three hits and three RBI’s for Harlan. Dayton Rand, Trevor Westhoff and Race Streker each a hit for Le Mars. Strecker took the loss on the mound for Le Mars.
In game two, the Cyclones scored five runs in the first two innings against Bulldog starter Ote Albrecht and went to complete the doubleheader sweep with an 8-3 victory. Again the Dogs had trouble mounting much of an offensive attack against the combined pitching of Brett Sears and Nick Tarney. The Cyclone tandem checked Le Mars to just four hits with senior Caleb Cline getting two of those hits. Harlan had an eleven hit attack with Brett Croghan and Nick Foss driving in two runs each. Le Mars closes out the regular season early next week, traveling to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Monday and to Denison-Schleswig Tuesday. The Bulldogs host a 3A District tournament semifinal doubleheader next Friday night at the Bulldog Complex.

CLASS 1A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
(AKRON) — Top-rated and two-time defending State champion Akron-Westfield is a win away from another trip to Fort Dodge after a 14-1 semifinal round victory over Trinity Christian Friday night at Akron in the 1A Regionals. Sophomore Ann Hedlund fired a complete game three-hitter with twelve strike outs and junior Katie Johnson led a 12-hit attack with four hits for the Westerners, coming up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Senior Desi Oltmanns drove in four runs. Akron-Westfield led 8-0 after three innings but didn’t go in front by double digits until they scored five runs in the seventh inning. Akron-Westfield improves to 28-and-4 for the season and will play number-nine River Valley Monday at the Sioux City East diamond in the Regional finals at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KLEM. The Westerners are looking for their 12th State tournament appearance in the last 13 years.
