FRIDAY RESULTS – August 28

(high school football)

(ORANGE CITY)  — M-O-C/Floyd Valley cashed in on some early mistakes to build a 26-7 lead midway through the third quarter but had to hold off a late charge by the Le Mars Bulldogs to win 33-28 Friday night in the season opener for both schools.  The Dutch took advantage of a costly personal foul penalty after a third down stop to score their first touchdown and then struck twice in the final four minutes of the first half on a fumbled punt return and a fumble on a kick-off return for a 19-7 lead at the halftime break.  A short punt set up a scoring opportunity for M-O-C/Floyd Valley on their first possession of the second half.  Koster Buss rallied the Bulldogs late in the third quarter when he connected on a 73-yard scoring pass to Collin Nemmers to trim the deficit to 26-13.  A 71-yard pass play from Buss-to-Nemmers in the fourth quarter set a one yard TD run by Tyler Pauley to draw the Dogs to within 26-20 with 8:04 to play in the game.  Dustin Folkema scored his third touchdown of the game on a three yard run to stretch the Dutch lead to 33-20 with 4:46 to go before Tyler Pauley struck again on a one yard run following an M-O-C/Floyd Valley fumble with 1:18 to play.  Koster Buss’ two-point conversion run made it 33-28 but M-O-C/Floyd Valley recovered the onside kick to seal the outcome.  The Bulldogs’ first touchdown came midway through the second quarter on an eight pass from Koster Buss to Silas Buss to give Le Mars their lone lead in the game at 7-6.

(LE MARS)  — Hunter DeJong ran for two touchdowns and Sibley-Ocheyedan held Gehlen Catholic to 158 yards of offense as the Generals marched to a 30-7 opening night win over the Jays Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field.  DeJong scored on runs of 6 and 15 yards while Carson Marco scampered 28 yards for a first quarter score and Beck Greene scored on a 69-yard dash in the third quarter to put the Generals in front 22-0.  The lone Gehlen score came on a 40-yard interception return by Evan Buddin with 3:29 to play in the third quarter.  Adam Ellensohn ran for 99 yards on 28 carries for one of the few bright spots for Gehlen offensively Friday night.
