FRIDAY RESULTS – September 4

(high school football)

(HINTON)  — Skyler Beller ran for three touchdowns and hauled in a 28 yard scoring pass from Jay Small as number four (1A) Hinton rolled to a 42-0 victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night in Hinton.  It was the final non-district tune-up for both schools before the district races begin next Friday night.  Beller scored on runs of one, 20 and 29 yards.  Daniel Bishop and Joe Hickman also ran for T-Ds for the Blackhawks, who improve to 2-and-0 for the season.  Gehlen trailed 35-0 at halftime and didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter.  The Jays managed just 122 yards of offense and four first downs.  Gehlen falls to 0-and-2 and open district play at home against state-rated South O’Brien next Friday.  Hinton plays their district opener at Ridge View next Friday night.

(LE MARS)  — Western Christian returned an interception for a score and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a 40-7 blitz of Le Mars Friday night, spoiling the home opener for the Bulldogs.  Taylor Miedema scored the first two Wolfpack touchdowns, returning an interception for a score before hauling in a 20-yard scoring pass from Tyson Kooima in the first quarter.  Miedema capped his big night with an 86 yard kick-off return after the Bulldogs Silas Buss returned an interception 40 yards for the lone Le Mars score in the game.  Ben Granstra ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolfpack.  Western Christian led 33-7 at halftime.  Le Mars had five turnovers.  Le Mars falls to 0-and-2 with the loss and will open district play next Friday at Storm Lake.  The game will be carried on KLEM.

(N-F-L football news)

(UNDATED)  — Former Bishop Heelan and Morningside College standout Brandon Wegher survived the final cut by the Carolina Panthers Saturday and has made the 53-man opening day N-F-L roster.  Wegher, who played one year of college football for Iowa before leaving school, scored three touchdowns and ran for 110 yards in four preseason games.  Wegher also caught two passes for 47 yards, including a game-winning 42-yard catch in the Panthers’ preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.  Wegher signed with the Panthers in May as an undrafted free agent.  He closed out his prep career at Bishop Heelan in 2008 with a record-setting 3,238 yards rushing.  After setting a freshman rushing record at Iowa in 2009, Wegher stepped away from football for personal reasons before resurrecting his career in 2013 at Morningside College.  Wegher set a new N-A-I-A single season rushing record in 2014 with 2,610 yards.

South Dakota State’s Zach Zenner also made an N-F-L roster Saturday when the former Jackrabbits running back survived the final cuts in the Detroit Lions camp.  Zenner led the Lions in rushing during the preseason with 183 yards on 35 carries.  Zenner had three 2,000 yard rushing seasons at S-D-S-U.
