O.J. Howard had five receptions for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while Jake Coker was 16 of 25 for 335 yards, two TDs and no interceptions. Alabama coach Nick Saban won his fifth national championship despite the quarterbacking of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, who threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns.

LE MARS — Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn remained unbeaten at 10-and-0 in girls basketball Tuesday night with a 66-39 victory at Gehlen Catholic in War Eagle Conference action at the Ronald Fox Memorial gymnasium. The Eagles led wire-to-wire in improving to 5-and-0 in the W-E-C to remain tied with Unity Christian for the league lead. Sarah Dreckman had 21 points for M-M-C and Rachael Meehen 17. Jolee Linden dropped in 13 for Gehlen Catholic, who saw their season record slip to 1-and-8 and 1-and-4 in league play.
In boys game, Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn went on a 13-0 run during a five minute span in the first half to erase a 10-6 deficit and the Eagles were never headed after that, beating Gehlen Catholic 60-46. The Jays whittled a 16-point third quarter deficit to five going into the fourth quarter but a 10-3 start to the final period by M-M-C put the game out of reach. The Eagles had four of their five starters score in double figures, led by Ben Specht with 16, Jacob Spieler and Jake Hunter had 13 each and Jerome Holmes added 11. Carson Kneip led Gehlen with 14 while Cole Wiltgen dropped in 12. The Jays fall to 4-and-5 for the season and 2-and-3 in the War Eagle Conference. M-M-C improves to 5-and-4 and 3-and-2 in league play.
The Gehlen boys travel to Lawton-Bronson Thursday for a make-up game and both the guys and gals travel to South O’Brien Friday for more War Eagle Conference action. M-M-C hosts Remsen-Union Friday.
LE MARS — The Sioux Center boys controlled the middle two quarters of their non-conference game at Le Mars Tuesday night and the Warriors won a 77-65 decision over the Bulldogs. Matt Van Engen poured in 31 points to lead Sioux Center in scoring with Marcus Winterfeld adding another 19. Trent Hilbrands had 29 points for the Bulldogs but no one else scored in double figures. Logan Lancaster and James Brownmiller had eight each and Will Pottebaum had seven. Sioux Center improves to 8-and-3 while Le Mars falls to 4-and-6 for the season. The Bulldogs host Emmetsburg Friday as they return to Lakes Conference play.

ORANGE CITY — Eleven years ago M-O-C/Floyd Valley and Le Mars played a five-overtime thriller in a Regional girls basketball game in Orange City. The two played overtime again Thursday night but this time settled things with just one extra four-minute period as M-O-C/Floyd Valley prevailed in a low scoring contest 46-42. Six-foot junior Morgan DeJong came off the bench to lead the Dutch with 14 points, including four in the overtime period as M-O-C/Floyd Valley outscored Le Mars 7-3 in the extra session. Breanne Schuiteman added 13 for the Dutch, connecting on 8-of-10 from the foul line. Madison Dreckman had 13 and Sidney Baumgartner 12 for Le Mars. Baumgartner’s tip-in with eleven seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. Le Mars falls to 5-and-7 heading into a Friday night Lakes Conference game against Emmetsburg at the Bulldogs gym. M-O-C/Floyd Valley improves to 7-and-5 and they’ll host Boyden-Hull Friday in the Siouxland Conference.
LAWTON — Lawton-Bronson rolled to a 32-18 halftime lead and went onto beat Gehlen Catholic 62-46 Thursday night in Lawton to make-up a postponement from November 30th. The loss drops Gehlen to 4-and-6 for the season. A.J. Lefler led a balanced Eagles attack with 13 with Keeston Hanks adding 11. Cole Wiltgen led all scorers with 15 for the Jays. Gehlen travels to South O’Brien Friday for War Eagle Conference play.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 16 Iowa remains unbeaten in the Big Ten after a surprisingly easy victory against fourth-ranked Michigan State.
Peter Jok scored 19 of his 23 points while the Hawkeyes were building a 22-point halftime lead in a 76-59 rout of the Spartans. The Hawkeyes dominated the Spartans for the second time in two weeks and beat them on the road for the first time since 1993. Michigan State was down by 22 points at intermission, its largest halftime deficit in the regular season since trailing at Michigan by 23 points at the break in 1997. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 in the conference and 13-3 overall. The Spartans are 16-2 this season, 3-2 in the Big Ten.

LE MARS — The Le Mars boys halted a three-game losing skid Friday night with a 75-45 thumping of Emmetsburg in Lakes Conference basketball action at the Bulldogs’ new gym. Le Mars opened the second half with a 19-4 run to extend a 15-point halftime lead to a 30-point cushion five minutes into the third quarter. The lead reached 35 points in the opening minute of the final quarter. Trent Hilbrands led three Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points. Dylan Harms drilled a trio of three-pointers enroute to a career-best 15 points and James Brownmiller also had three 3’s and finished with 11. The Bulldogs had ten treys for the night, earning $30 for the school from American Bank, who has pledged to pay each school in Le Mars $3 for every three-pointer the schools hit during their home games. Dalton Connelly had 18 points and Thomas Schultes added 12 for the E-Hawks. Le Mars improves to 5-and-6 for the season and 4-and-3 in the Lakes Conference heading into a showdown with the league leading Western Christian Wolfpack Tuesday night in Le Mars.
The Le Mars girls also returned to the win column after two road losses, beating Emmetsburg 45-30 Friday. Sophomore Jen Schneider matched her season-best scoring performance with 18 points for the Lady Bulldogs with Madison Dreckman adding nine and Cassidy Utesch and Katrina Engebretson getting eight each. Le Mars improves to 6-and-7 for the season and 4-and-3 in league play.
PAULLINA — It was another tough night offensively for the Gehlen Catholic guys and gals as South O’Brien swept a War Eagle Conference doubleheader from the Jays in Paullina. The South O’Brien girls earned their first win of the season, 63-37 over the Lady Jays to improve to 1-and-12. Gehlen falls to 1-and-9 for the season and 1-and-5 in the W-E-C. The Wolverines led 21-18 at halftime before outscoring Gehlen 42-19 in the second half. Amanda Litka had 16 for South O’Brien and Whitney Sickelka added 10. Krayton Schnepf, Jaci Alesch and Grace Auchstetter had seven each for Gehlen.
The South O’Brien boys improved their War Eagle Conference record to 6-and-0 to stay a half-game ahead of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the league standings and are now 11-and-1 for the season after beating Gehlen Catholic 56-35 Friday night. Damon Struve led a balanced scoring attack for the Wolverines with 17, Cameron Maxwell had 13 and Kyle Paulson ten. Roman Freking and Cole Wiltgen led Gehlen Catholic with eight each. The Jays slip to 4-and-7 for the season and 2-and-4 in the conference.
The Gehlen guys and gals host Woodbury Central Monday night. The doubleheader will be carried on KLEM.

Sibley-Ocheyedan crowned five champions Saturday enroute to winning the team title of the Le Mars Wrestling Invitational. The Generals racked up 239 points with tournament new comer, A-H-S-T, coming in second with 196 points. Defending champion Sioux City North took third, finishing one-half point ahead of Sioux Center. West Sioux was fifth, Hinton sixth, Le Mars seventh with South Sioux City, Cherokee, Sheldon/South O’Brien and Sioux City West claiming the final four spots in the 11-team field. Le Mars senior Donny Allaway won the third Invitational title of his career, earning a 10-3 victory in the 126-pound title match against A-H-S-T’s Joel Becerra. Fernando Zetina of Le Mars wrestled for the 106-pound championship but lost a 19-11 decision to Jose Flores of Sibley-Ocheyedan. Hinton had two champions, Skylar Richter at 120 pounds and Daniel Bishop at 182. The Blackhawks’ Lucas Vondrak was runner-up at 138 and Jordan Gengler took second at 220 pounds. Le Mars got a third place finish from heavyweight Jesus Diaz and fourth place finishes from Myles Kass at 152 and Travis Theisen at 220.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a pair of scoring passes and scored on a one-yard run as the New England Patriots beat Kansas City 27-20 to advance to the A-F-C championship game for the fifth straight year. Gronkowski had touchdown catches of 8 and 16 yards and finished with seven receptions for 82 yards after spending the last two weeks recovering from knee and back injuries.
