CHEROKEE — Number 4 (3A) Cherokee held off an upset bid by Le Mars Tuesday night and swept their season series from the Lady Bulldogs with a 66-54 victory in Cherokee in Lakes Conference girls basketball action.  The Braves built a 15-point halftime lead but saw Le Mars open the the second half with a 13-2 run, including ten straight points, to narrow the deficit to four.  The Braves extended a six-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter to 13 midway through the final period before posting a 12-point victory.  Kaely Hummel led Cherokee’s scoring with 22 points with Makenna Carver adding 15.  Cassidy Utesch led Le Mars with a career high 15, Jen Schneider had 13 and Madison Dreckman 12.  Le Mars falls to 6-and-10 for the season and 4-and-6 in league play.  Seven of their ten losses have come to ranked opponents this season.  Cherokee remains tied for the Lakes Conference lead with a 9-and-1 league mark and the Braves go to 16-and-1 for the season.

The Le Mars boys squared their record at 7-and-7 and improved their league mark to 6-and-4 with an 81-54 win over Cherokee Tuesday.  The Bulldogs overcame a sloppy first half to win by 27 after posting just a five-point lead at halftime.  Le Mars opened the second half by outscoring the Braves 16-2 to quickly turn the contest into a one-sided affair by the three minute mark of the third quarter.  Conference scoring leader, Trent Hilbrands, led Le Mars with 27 points with Dylan Harms scoring 14 and Jake Thompson 10.  Eric Peterson led Cherokee with 16 with Mason Pitts adding another 13.  Cherokee falls to 5-and-12 for the season and 2-and-8 in Lakes Conference play.

HAWARDEN — The Gehlen Catholic boys earned a big road win Tuesday at Hawarden, beating West Sioux 68-60 in War Eagle Conference action.  West Sioux was coming off an upset of league-leading South O’Brien on Friday.  The Jays built a 14-point halftime lead before holding off the Falcons in the fourth quarter.  Alec Langel led the Jays with 21 points with Roman Freking adding another 17.  Porter Hummel had 19 for the Falcons, who fall to 10-and-6 for the season.  The Jays improve to 6-and-8 for the season and are now 4-and-4 in War Eagle Conference play.  The Gehlen win avenged an eight-point loss to West Sioux back in December.

West Sioux won the girls game 58-21 over Gehlen Catholic to sweep the season series.  Taylor Rodenburgh had 18 points for the Falcons to top all scorers.  Grace Auchstetter had five for Gehlen.  The Lady Jays have now dropped eight in a row while falling to 1-and-12 for the season and 1-and-7 in league play.  West Sioux is 10-and-7.

LE MARS — Freshman Madison Dreckman scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help Le Mars pull away from Estherville/Lincoln Central and post a 56-40 Lakes Conference victory over the Midgets Friday night at the Bulldogs new gym.  The Lady Bulldogs out scored the Midgets 20-11 in the final quarter to snap a three-game losing streak.  Cassidy Utesch had 13 points for Le Mars and Katrina Engebretson added 10.  Morgan White had 19 for E-L-C while Josie Condon dropped in 15.  Le Mars will take a 7-and-10 record into their home finale on Monday against Bishop Heelan before travelling to Storm Lake on Tuesday.  The Lady Bulldogs are 5-and-6 in league play.

The Le Mars boys ran their winning streak to a season-best three straight with a 69-46 win over Estherville/Lincoln Central Friday.  The game was close for much of three quarters before the Bulldogs closed the game on a 20-2 run in the final ten minutes to win by 23.  Trent Hilbrands started the run with a three-pointer at the buzzer to close out the third quarter and extend a 49-44 lead to 52-44 heading into the final eight minutes.  E-L-C failed to hit a field goal in the final quarter, settling for a pair of free throws from Alex Miller.  Lakes Conference scoring leader, junior Trent Hilbrands, had 28 points to lead Le Mars in scoring.  Jack Brashear had 16 for the Midgets.  They were the lone double figure scorers in the game.  Le Mars has now won the last 30 meetings against E-L-C dating back to the 2000-2001 season.  The Bulldogs improve to 8-and-7 for the season and 7-and-4 in league play, which ties them for third place with Spencer.

LE MARS  — The Gehlen Catholic girls put a halt to an eight-game losing streak Friday night with a 44-39 War Eagle Conference victory over conference newcomer Clay Central-Everly at Gehlen’s Ronald Fox Memorial gym.  Grace Auchstetter scored 11 points to key the win, connecting on three of the Lady Jays six three-pointers.  Jolee Linden and Kaylee Schmit had nine points each and Jaci Alesch had seven.  The two were tied 21-all at halftime before Gehlen took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.  The Lady Jays improve to 2-and-12 for the season and 2-and-7 in War Eagle Conference play.

The Gehlen boys picked up their third straight victory with a 67-34 romp over Clay Central-Everly, improving their season record to 7-and-8 and their conference mark to 5-and-4.  Cole Wiltgen drilled three treys on the way to a team-best 17 points to lead Gehlen in scoring.  Alec Langel had 12 for the Jays.   Clay Central-Everly falls to 0-and-16 for the season.  Gehlen Catholic’s games at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scheduled for Tuesday have been moved up to Monday to beat the impending winter weather forecast for Tuesday.
