Secondary Road Department To Close 150th Street

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department will be closing 150th Street between Highways 60 and 75 beginning today (Thursday). The road is being closed so crews can perform construction of a bridge. It is expected the road will open again on October 6th.

 

Airport Terminal To Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

(Le Mars) — Le Mars city personnel will unveil the newly remodeled municipal airport terminal building during an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Thursday. The public is invited to view the renovated airport facilities beginning at 11:00 a.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served to attendees. The project was funded by using both public and private monies to create the new look. The terminal features new furnishings, a pilot lounge, a new door entry, and new signage has been erected to assist people in locating the airport. According to airport officials, the new renovated look will make a good first impression of Le Mars for those that use the airport.

 

Orange City Fire Department To Hold Ground Breaking Ceremonies

(Orange City) — The Orange City Fire Department will break ground on Friday for its fire station expansion project. The ground breaking ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. The Orange City Fire Station will be expanded by approximately 12,000 square feet, and 3,840 square feet of the current station will be remodeled. Orange City residents passed a $2,700,000 bond last March with more than 83 percent approval rating.

 

West Nile Virus Detected In Sioux County

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have reported 2016’s Iowa’s first confirmed human cases of West Nile virus were found in Sioux County.
The Iowa Public Health Department said in a news release Wednesday that a female child and an adult male in Sioux County were hospitalized but are recovering.
The department says about 20 percent of people infected with West Nile virus will have mild to moderate symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and vomiting. Less than 1 percent become seriously ill.
Experts say people can reduce their risk of exposure to mosquitoes carrying the virus by using repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus and avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
The department says the last two Iowa deaths caused by West Nile virus occurred in 2010.

 

Wells Enterprises Awards Four Scholarships To College Students

(Le Mars) — Wells Enterprises, Inc. recently awarded college scholarships to four summer seasonal employees. The new program for the 2016 season, offered the chance at a $2,500 scholarship for summer employees enrolled in a two or four year college. To be eligible, the employees must have been employed at Wells for the summer through August 12th, and have an attendance and be a solid performer. Each year, Wells employs over 100 college students in the manufacturing facilities during the summer. The four scholarship winners include: Mitchell Sitzmann of Le Mars. Sitzmann worked in production on a day shift at the South Ice Cream Plant and previously had worked at the ice cream parlor. Sitzmann will attend the University of Iowa. Rebecca Thiel of Granville is a student at the South Dakota State University. This is Thiel’s third year with Wells, spending this season in production on the night shift at the North Ice Cream Plant. Brian Smith of originally from Phoenix, Arizona, attends Briar Cliff University in Sioux City where he is a member of the football team. Smith spent his first summer with Wells working in the freezer on the night shift. Remsen native, Nikolas Langel was the fourth scholarship recipient. Langel worked production at the South Ice Cream plant in the Summer-flex program. This new program offered a three-day flexible work schedule, allowing the employee to work three days with the option to pick up additional shifts. Nikolas is enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa.

 

Le Mars Chamber Accepting Applications For Little Ambassadors

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a contest to select ten children who will serve as the fall 2016 to fall 2018 Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Little Ambassadors. Children must be 4 to 6 years of age and reside in the City of Le Mars or rural Le Mars area.
Now through September 19, 2016 will be accepting nominations for Little Ambassadors. No late entries accepted. Please submit a color 5X7 photo – include the name of the child and parents, address and phone number with the submission. Do not write on the photo. Photos will not be returned. They can be dropped off or mailed to the Chamber of Commerce, , 50 Central Ave SE, Le Mars, IA 51031 or they can also be taken to Floyd Valley Hospital – attention Mary Helen Gibson or Primebank – attention Becky Klohs.
A selection committee will choose five boys and five girls to serve as the Le Mars Little Ambassadors. The children will participate in local events such as Ice Cream Days Parade, Halloween Trick or Treating for children, Pioneer Village Santa visits and other local community events.

 

Man Rescued From Iowa River

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Firefighters have rescued a man from the Iowa River in Iowa City.
Officers and firefighters were sent to the Burlington Street Dam around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday. They found the man clinging to a log stuck in the dam wall. Deputy Fire Chief Roger Jensen says the man must have gone over the dam.
A rescuer who was lowered to the man attached a harness to him, and he was pulled to safety. The man was treated later for minor injuries. His name hasn’t been released.

 

Des Moines Police Arrest Man Connected To Fatal Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Police have arrested a Des Moines man in connection with a weekend crash that killed the driver of another vehicle. Police Wednesday said investigators arrested 34-year-old Darnell Browder after his release from a hospital. Among the charges were homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated and homicide by motor vehicle while driving recklessly. The charges stem from a brief chase by police early Sunday that ended when Browder crashed into a car, killing 41-year-old Jason Hunt.
