TUESDAY RESULTS – February 27

GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT at the Wells Fargo Arena
CLASS 4A QUARTERFINALS
#9-Le Mars (18-6) 52, #2-Lewis Central 43

DES MOINES — No. 9 Le Mars rattled off 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to erase an 11-8 deficit and the Lady Bulldogs went on to post a 52-43 upset win over No. 2 Lewis Central in the 4A quarterfinals at the girls State high school basketball tournament this morning in Des Moines.  The 17-4 second quarter advantage gave Le Mars a 25-13 lead at halftime and the Lady Bulldogs went up by 15 after three quarters.  After Le Mars took a 35-19 lead in the opening eight seconds of the fourth quarter, Lewis Central went on a 21-8 run to draw to within 43-40 with 1:42 to play.  Le Mars hit enough foul shots down the stretch to fend off the Titans and avenge the Regional finals loss last season to Lewis Central.  Sophomore Jaelynn Dreckman led Le Mars off the bench with a career-high 16 points, Madison Dreckman added 13 and Jenn Schneider 10.  Maegen Holt led all scorers with 16 for Lewis Central.  Le Mars takes an 18-6 record into Thursday’s semifinals against No.3 Grinnell (22-2) at 3:15.  Coverage on KLEM begins at 3:05.  Lewis Central ends the season at 22-and-1.

THURSDAY RESULTS – March 1

GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT at the Wells Fargo Arena 

DES MOINES — No. 3 Grinnell ended the Cindarella tournament ride for No. 9 Le Mars Thursday afternoon, scoring 30 second quarter points to build a 20-point halftime lead, and the Lady Tigers advanced to the 4A championship game with a 68-47 semifinal round victory at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  Le Mars got off to a terrific start Thursday, leading 8-2 midway through the first quarter and still held a 13-12 advantage going into the second period.  The Lady Tigers outscored Le Mars 30-9 in the second quarter, closing the first half on a 17-2 run to take a 42-22 halftime lead and the contest was all but decided.  Grinnell led by as many as 28 points in the third quarter before the Bulldogs fought back to within 17.  Madison Dreckman finished with 11 points and Jenn Schneider had 10 to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring.  All-Stater, Sienna Durr had 23 points for Grinnell and Naomi Jackson added 21.  Le Mars ends the season at 18-and-7 while Grinnell improves to 23-and-2.  The Tigers meet top-rated, unbeaten Marion for the State title in Class 4A Friday night at 8 pm.
