Gehlen Baseball Shuts Out Central Lyon Behind Kraft’s Pitching Gem

Coming off a busy week in the CYO Tournament, Gehlen Catholic baseball opened a new week with a 5-0 road non-conference win over Central Lyon.

The story of the night was the pitching performance from Connor Kraft. The junior ace came into the game with some impressive stats including the fact that he hadn’t allowed an earned run in 18 innings up to the game. He continued that streak retiring the first 17 Lions he faced and finishing with six innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out 11. Gehlen Head Coach Kirk Kronaizl says he saw Kraft turn things up a notch on Monday night.

Coach Kronaizl says that harder velocity comes from the hard work that Kraft puts in from season to season.

The Jays have struggled in some run-scoring situations throughout the season. That didn’t happen on Monday night. Gehlen Catholic scored four runs in the fourth inning and added another run in the sixth. Coach Kronaizl says it came down to guys stepping up and making big plays at the plate.

That said, Coach Kronaizl isn’t content with just the five runs his team put up. Ideally, he’d like to see more consistent run-production rather than just having one big inning.

With one big weekend wrapped up and another one on the horizon, the Jays know they’ll need to play some good sustained baseball to keep the wins coming. Coach Kronaizl says these busy weeks are great because the guys get good live at bats, and they get to face some very good teams that will keep making them better.

The Jays record improved to 5-6 with the win while Central Lyon fell to 3-6.
