The Le Mars volleyball tournament on Saturday morning was a strong one for the Hinton Blackhawks. The eleventh-ranked Blackhawks entered the weekend with a 4-0 record and finished it with a still unblemished record of 8-0. Co-Head Coach Kate Ortegren says her team has consistently gotten better and better, and that was on display on Saturday.
It wouldn’t be smooth sailing all the way for the Blackhawks. Hinton started with straight-set sweeps over Lawton-Bronson and Gehlen Catholic. They then found themselves behind in their last two matches dropping the first set in both matches with Sioux City North and Dakota Valley. Coach Ortegren says those matches at the end of the tournament showed her team’s will to win.

The Blackhawks have found this early success with the help of a phenom freshman in Bailey Boeve. She recorded 45 kills while hitting .453, 29 blocks, and 19 digs in the tournament on Saturday. Coach Ortegren says she brings strength on the court and off of it.

The Blackhawks have a number of tough competitions still to play starting on Thursday when they host Remsen St. Mary’s. Coach Ortegren says that, if the Blackhawks want to continue this run, they’ll need to strengthen things on defense.
First serve against Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday will be around 7:00.
