Bulldog Softball Season Ends on Nighthawk Extra-Inning Rally

The Le Mars Community softball season ended in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday night. The Bulldogs fell in the regional opening round to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley by a score of 11-4 in eight innings.

The game started with a two-run first inning from B-H/RV that was answered with a four-run second inning by Le Mars. Head Coach Brooke Harder says they just capitalized on mistakes by the Nighthawk defense.

Le Mars did not score for the rest of the game and ended up leaving 11 runners on base by the time the game was over. Coach Harder says the Bulldogs just missed timely hitting to get some more runs on the board.

The Nighthawks worked their magic in the late innings. Down 4-2, the Nighthawks scored a run in the sixth and a run with two outs in the seventh inning. Then, B-H/RV did the unthinkable scoring seven runs in the eighth inning to seal the game. Coach Harder says they had timed up the pitching and got on a roll.

It is a very tough way for the season to end for the Bulldogs who bow out of the tournament in the opening round for the second year in a row. Coach Harder says once the momentum shifted it was really tough to get things going their way again.

Le Mars graduates three seniors off the team in Libby Leraas, Calla Langel, and Payton Wright. Coach Harder says all three had a huge impact on the program.

Le Mars ends the season with a record of 23-13. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley moves on to face No. 15 Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the regional semifinal on Saturday.
