Ricke Scores 1,000th Point as Remsen St. Mary’s Girls Basketball Starts Postseason with Dominant Win

Third-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s girls basketball opened their tournament run with a dominant win and a milestone on Tuesday night. The Hawks beat Boyden-Hull by a score of 70-22 in the regional quarterfinal, and senior Carmindee Ricke become the third Hawk this season to join the 1,000-career point club.

The Hawks and Comets played a pretty even first quarter with neither team able to gain much ground on the other. The Hawks had a 19-12 lead when the first quarter came to an end. Head coach Scott Willman says the Hawks were just making some mistakes they were not used to making.

Remsen St. Mary’s quickly flipped things around for the rest of the game. The Hawks outscored Boyden-Hull 51-10 in the final three quarters cruising on to the semifinal round of the region. Coach Willman says the difference was the effort the girls played with on defense.

Carmindee Ricke needed 13 points in the game to reach 1,000-career points. She scored nine of the first 11 points of the game and was quiet for a while offensively. She would get her 1,000th career point early in the fourth quarter, and she says it was a good feeling to reach it in front of her friends and family.

Ricke is the fourth Lady Hawk in school history to reach the mark. More impressively, she is the third Lady Hawk this season to reach the historic mark. Coach Willman says these moments are team moments that can highlight how strong the bond is between players.

Ricke says that bond breeds chemistry, and that is displayed in all aspects of the game.

The Hawks improved to 21-0 on the season and will take on West Bend-Mallard in the regional semifinals on Friday night in Remsen. Coach Willman says there may be bad stretches like the first quarter of Tuesday night. He says the key is not trying to work out of it, but, rather, ride it out and come out positive on the other side.

Tip-off between the Hawks and Wolverines will be at 7:00 PM in Remsen. KLEM Radio will bring you the game live with coverage beginning at 6:45.
