New coach to lead Akron-Westfield boys basketball following historic year

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team had one of their better seasons in recent memory last year going 13-8 last year and finishing third in the War Eagle Conference. The Westerners will be under new leadership this year with Steven Husk taking over for his first head coaching gig. Coach Husk says he is excited to coach this group of guys.

A lot of the seniors last year had been starting for all four years of varsity basketball making it tough for the guys to follow them to get experience. Coach Husk says those opportunities did not provide as much physically, but they did provide a lot of learning experiences that will be valuable this year.

Since the Westerners graduated two players who each averaged 15 points per game, the offense may get off to a slow start this year. That is alright for Coach Husk who says the guys will need to be good defensively anyway to put together a good season.

Basketball is a long season that turns into a grind very quickly. Coach Husk knows that and says he is encouraging his guys to take things one game at a time this year.

The Westerners start their season at home against Westwood with an anticipated start time of 7:30 PM tonight.
