The Gehlen Catholic football team picked up their first win of the year with a 21-0 homecoming win over Sioux Central on Friday night.
After struggling to move the ball on the ground the first two games, the Jays were able to break through in that department to the tune of 231 yards rushing. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says the ball carriers get the praise, but it’s the big guys on the line that made it happen.
Pitching a shutout is no easy task either, and the Jays did that by taking away Sioux Central’s pass attack. The Rebels brought back their senior signal caller who had missed the first two games, and he completed just five of his 14 passes for a total of 80 yards. Coach Schindler says his defense made great reads to limit the passing game’s impact.
After a season of success last year going 8-2, it was understandable that the Jays may take a step back this year. Coach Schindler says the step back was larger than he anticipated, but he is happy that the guys are back on the right track.
Gehlen will play two road games back-to-back the next couple of weeks starting with a road game at district-unbeaten Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Coach Schindler says this got the snowball rolling downhill, and he needs his team to keep it rolling.
Gehlen’s matchup with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn kicks off at 7:00 PM on Friday night in Hartley. KLEM Radio will broadcast the game on radio and video stream with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM.
