The Hinton boys basketball team won a physical contest with Gehlen Catholic on Tuesday night by the score of 45-40.
There was a lot of emotion and interest in this game with both teams being among the favorites to contend for a War Eagle Conference title. Hinton head coach John Spies says that makes a win like this that much sweeter.
On Gehlen Catholic’s side, the Jays struggled most of the night on the offensive side. Outside of a third quarter in which they scored 16 points, the Jays did not score more than nine points in any frame. Head coach Eric Kellen says the ball movement was not crisp enough for his team to do what they needed to do.
Hinton had to overcome some offensive struggles too. Those struggles were spurred on by Gehlen’s zone defense forcing the Blackhawks to take a lot more outside shots. Coach Spies says his team adjusted well later in the game to the Gehlen defense.
With the Jays at 3-2 on the season, they will look to overcome a choppy start to get back in the win column. Head coach Eric Kellen says that means reviewing some things and trying to get everybody back on the same page.
The Blackhawks are 2-1 on the season, and they have some tough games coming up in their schedule. Coach Spies says he likes where his team is at, so the fundamental side is something he will be focusing on to keep getting better.
Gehlen Catholic returns to the floor against a perennial state tournament contender with Unity Christian coming to town. Hinton battles another top team in the War Eagle Conference on the road on Friday night with a matchup against MMCRU.
