The Optimist Club of Le Mars has announced they’ve donated $1,500 to the Le Mars Backpack Program. The Backpack Program provides basic necessities, such as food or supplies, to students and families in need. Members of the club spent Monday packing bags and presenting a check to Brenda Nohava of the program.

Chartered in 1985, the club says their vision is “to bring out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves.” The group has given back to the community recently, donating to both Le Mars Community and Gehlen Catholic’s 4th-6th grade student field trips during the 2025-26 school year, donating to the Le Mars Public Library children’s program, and providing fun events for students such as movies, bowling, pool parties, roller skating, and ice skating.

Public library in Sioux City faces million-dollar budget cut

Sioux City leaders are considering slashing the budget of the city library by about one million dollars, or 25 percent. City council member Rick Bertrand says the main goal is to modernize the library system.

Bertrand says he favors more community-based libraries with amenities like coffee shops, but library officials say they still need a central location, and major cuts would have a negative impact. Library director Helen Rigdon (RIG-done) says the Sioux City Library system already has one of the smallest full-time staffs in the state for a city of its size, and the proposed cuts would reduce the number of employees from 31 to 25.

Rigdon says city leaders wanted suggestions on modernizing the library, but her board wanted to wait until a new director is hired. Rigdon is retiring at the end of April.

A final budget meeting is planned for March 18th.
