DES MOINES — No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s advanced to Wednesday afternoon’s 1A semifinals with a 73-57 victory over No. 4 Lynnville-Sully Monday at the boys State basketball tournament in Des Moines.  St. Mary’s reeled off 13 unanswered points to break away from a 26-all tie in the second quarter and led 39-28 at halftime.  Lynnville-Sully whittled the difference to 48-42 by the end of the third quarter and closed to within 48-44 in the opening minute of the final quarter.  But a 19-7 run by St. Mary’s closed the deal and sent them onto the semifinals for a second year in a row where they’ll have a rematch with defending State champion, Grand View Christian Wednesday at 3:45.  Derrick Schorg led Remsen St. Mary’s with 20 points and 12 rebounds Monday.  Brody Ricke added 18, Carter Kuchel 11 and Spencer Schorg 10.  Tanner Foster had 19 for Lynnville-Sully.  Remsen St. Mary’s improves to 26-and-0 while Lynnville-Sully falls to 22-and-4.

WEDNESDAY RESULTS – March 7

DES MOINES — Defending State champion, No. 2 Grand View Christian, ran off 11 straight points after falling behind 48-40 with 5:30 to play to rally for a 59-53 victory over No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s Wednesday afternoon in the Class 1A semifinals in Des Moines.  The win sends the Thunder into the State title game against No. 1 North Linn (28-0) Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.  Remsen St. Mary’s will close out their season Thursday morning in the third place game against No. 6 Don Bosco.  The two met last November in the UNI-Dome for the 8-player State football championship.  The Hawks, who fall from the ranks of unbeaten with Wednesday’s loss, drops to 26-and-1.  Brody Ricke led the St. Mary’s offense Wednesday with 16 points while Nicholas Ruden added 13 points and nine rebounds and Spencer Schorg had 10 points for the Hawks.  Grant DeMeulenaere had 18 points for the Thunder, who improve to 24-and-1.

THURSDAY RESULTS – March 8

CLASS 1A CONSOLATION GAME
#6-Don Bosco (24-4) 61, #3-Remsen St. Mary’s (26-2) 51

DES MOINES — #6-Don Bosco closed the game on a 19-8 run to rally from a 43-42 deficit early in the fourth quarter to a 61-51 win over #3-Remsen St. Mary’s Thursday morning in the Class 1A consolation game at the Boys State basketball tournament in Des Moines.  The Hawks took a 43-42 lead on Derrick Schorg’s three-point play with 6:09 to go in the game.  Zach Nie and Jack Kelley combined on the next seven points for the Dons as they went ahead 49-43 and were never headed again.  Don Bosco finished 20-of-21 from the free throw line and outscored St. Mary’s by 16 points from the charity stripe.  The Dons also had a 35-22 rebound advantage in the game.  Derrick Schorg finished with 18 points and six rebounds for the Hawks with Carter Kuchel dropping in 13 and Spencer Schorg and Brody Ricke adding 10 each.  Kelley and Nie had 24 points each for the Dons.  Remsen St. Mary’s finishes at 26-and-2 and in fourth place for the second straight year while Don Bosco closes out a 24-and-4 season.  St. Mary’s said good-bye to seven seniors, four of which were starters.
