Update on construction projects
(LE MARS)–Volunteers plan to refurbish a popular playground in Le Mars.
The Le Mars Young Professionals (HYPER) and the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce Main Street program will work together to freshen up Cleveland Castle.
The 12-thousand-square foot wooden ice cream themed-play area was built in 1998 and is located at .2nd Street and 6th Avenue Southeast.
A community work night to paint and refresh the exterior of Cleveland Castle is being organized by the two groups. The work begins at 6 p-m on Thursday, August 12th.

(SIOUX CITY)–A Siouxland health care provider is listed in a new publication ranking centers for their treatment of strokes.
Mercy Medical Center received the mention in the August 2010 issue of U-S News and World Report as one of the American Stroke Association’s leading centers for stroke treatment.
In the publication of best hospitals, Mercy in Sioux City is included in the group of leading hospitals to earn the American Stroke Association’s 2010 Gold Plus Achievement Award.
Hole opens up in dike near E. Iowa town of Olin
OLIN, Iowa (AP) Firefighters say a 40-foot hole has opened up in a dike near the eastern Iowa town of Olin, and farm fields and the backyards of nearby homes are taking on water.
The dike, just north of Olin, broke around 2 p.m. on Monday.
The damage is mostly on the west side of the Jones County community, but yards are also filling up and roads are covered with water on the eastern side of town.
The flooding is coming from a combination of the Wapsipinicon River and Walnut Creek.
Some of the flooded properties were already empty from the flood of 2008, but the dike didn’t break during the 2008 flood.
Jones County Emergency Management Coordinator Brenda Leonard says crews are assessing the leak.

YATES CITY, Ill. (AP) A Nebraska man walked away nearly uninjured from a crash that all but destroyed the crop dusting plane he was piloting.
The Knox County sheriff’s department says the crash happened Sunday afternoon in rural Yates City in western Illinois.
Authorities say Gary Denevan of Tekamah, Neb., told them he’d been spraying insecticide in the area after taking off from Monmouth Airport. He says he was out of insecticide and preparing to fly back when his engine suddenly stopped running.
Denevan told authorities he tried to guide the plane to a forced off-runway landing when the crash happened. Deputies say the plane sustained heavy damage, as did the farm field Denevan landed in.
Denevan was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Deputies say the FAA was notified of the crash and will investigate.

Dubuque man sentenced to 35 years in 2 stabbings
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) A Dubuque man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for stabbing two men during a Labor day melee in Dubuque.
Nineteen-year-old Jerel Wright received the maximum term of 25 years Monday for attempted murder and 10 years for voluntary manslaughter.
Dubuque County District Judge Michael Shubatt ordered that Wright serve his sentences consecutively. Wright will be eligible for parole after 17.5 years.
Wright was found guilty in May of attempted murder in the stabbing of 24-year-old Derrick Tye during a large street fight. He also was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of 24-year-old Jermaris West.
In court Monday, Wright expressed no remorse. He said he would have died if West hadn’t.

6,000 acres of crop land flooded by Iowa dam break
MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) Thousands of acres of cropland inundated when the Lake Delhi dam burst may be difficult to harvest even if some of the crops survive.
Delaware County District Conservationist Keith Krause says the best estimate as of Monday is that 2,000 acres of crop land and 2,000 acres of pasture were flooded along the Maquoketa River.
Rough preliminary estimates are that about 4,000 acres of crop land may have flooded in Jones County.
While some of the crops may recover, Krause says, much of the pasture will be lost for the season because it will be too covered with silt and mud.
Krause says harvesting surviving crops may be hard because of all the trees, tin, wood from docks and other debris that made its way into the fields.

Man drowns in dam accident in north-central Iowa
FERTILE, Iowa (AP) Authorities say a 43-year-old man from Fertile drowned as he tried to help clean up debris from a dam on the Winnebago River in his north-central Iowa community.
Sheriff Jay Langenbau says emergency personnel performed CPR on the man at the scene Monday but could not revive him. His name has not been released.
The sheriff says the man was one of two people working on the dam when he fell in, and he’s calling the death a drowning. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
A witness at the scene said the man was helping clean up logs and sticks from the top of the dam when a three-pronged hook on a line got caught on a log and pulled the man in.

Airman from Iowa dies while swimming in Japan
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) An airman from Iowa has died while swimming in Japan.
The Air Force said Monday that 24-year-old Airman Robert A. Hasley, of Des Moines, was reported missing Saturday while swimming with five other service members.
Japanese responders arrived on the scene shortly after Hasley disappeared. They rescued the other five airmen swimming with Hasley, all of whom were stranded by the rising waves and waters in Tanahashi Cove in northern Japan.
The Air Force says Japanese responders found Hasley’s body Sunday.
Hasley is survived by his father, Anthony W. Vestal, and his grandmother, Barbara D. Vestal.
A memorial service is planned for Friday at the Misawa Air Base, where he was stationed.
