(SPIRIT LAKE) — Paige Krause put an end to a wild scoring derby with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday night to lift Spirit Lake to an 11-10 Lakes Conference softball win over Le Mars. The Lady Bulldogs had taken a 10-6 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth only to have the Indians counter with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 10-all. Emily Pick had a grand slam homer in the fifth for Le Mars and Molly Renken added a solo shot in the third. Krause homered for the Indians and finished with four RBI’s for the night. Krause was also the winning pitcher for Spirit Lake. Molly Renken, the third pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs, took the loss. Le Mars falls to 23-and-9 for the season and 8-and-3 in league play.
Akron-Westfield (29-1/16-0) 11 Gehlen Catholic (17-10/10-6) 0
(LE MARS) — Top-rated (1A) Akron-Westfield jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings of play Monday night and cruised past Gehlen Catholic 11-0 in War Eagle Conference softball action at the Riverview Complex in Le Mars. Brandi Davis drove in five runs on three hits for the Westerners and ran her pitching record to 18-and-1, combining with Dana Hedlund on a two-hit shutout. Davis walked one and struck out ten while allowing only a third inning infield single by Steph Rohe in six innings of work. Hedlund gave up an infield single to Brittany Loutsch as she worked the seventh inning. The Westerners collected 13 hits off Amber Timmins. Timmins issued five walks. A-W improves to 16-and-0 in War Eagle Conference play and 29-and-1 for the season while Gehlen falls to 17-and-10 for the season and 10-and-6 in league play.

(SPIRIT LAKE) — Chris Eckstaine drove in five runs on three hits, collecting a home run and two doubles, and threw a four-hitter with seven strike outs to lead number-ten (3A) Le Mars to a 12-1 Lakes Conference baseball victory over Spirit Lake Monday night in a game shortened to six innings by the ten-run rule. The Bulldogs stay unbeaten in league play at 10-and-0 and improve to 18-and-5 for the season. Andy Hefner had a pretty good night at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with four RBI’s with a homer and a double.
Akron-Westfield (5-15) 4 Gehlen Catholic (10-11/8-7) 3
(LE MARS) —Mitch Hedlund returned to the Akron-Westfield line-up Monday night after missing all but one of the Westerners first 18 games to throw a five-hitter to pitch A-W to a 4-3 War Eagle Conference baseball victory over Gehlen Catholic at the Riverview Complex. Spencer Frankl’s bases-loaded single in the second inning led to three runs and David Burkes gave the Westerners a 4-0 lead with a RBI double an inning later. Michael Whitehead’s two-run double in the bottom of the third cut the A-W lead to 4-2 and Mitchell Flack’s RBI single an inning later made 4-3. The Jays left the tying run on base in the seventh. Whitehead took the loss on the mound despite allowing just four hits and striking out nine. Akron-Westfield is now 5-and-15 for the season and 5-and-9 in the W-E-C. Gehlen falls to 10-and-11 for the season and 8-and-7 in War Eagle Conference play.

(LE MARS) — A night after losing in the bottom of the seventh inning at Spirit Lake, the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs earned a walk-off victory over Sioux Center with a RBI single by Madison Heidebrink for a 6-5 non-conference softball victory Tuesday night at the Bulldog Complex. Sioux Center had tied the score in the top of the seventh before Holly Schneider doubled to lead-off the bottom of the seventh, advanced to third on Emily Ellefson’s ground out and then scored the winning run on Heidebrink’s hit. Le Mars erased a 1-0 deficit in the fourth on Kylee Lang’s grand slam homer. The Warriors tied it with three runs in the fifth. Holly Schneider’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth put Le Mars back in front 5-4. Freshman Jayme Kelly earned her first varsity victory in relief. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 24-and-9 for the season.

(LE MARS) — Seniors Steph Rohe and Amber Timmins played a key role in a doubleheader softball sweep by Gehlen Catholic against the visiting Spalding Spartans Tuesday night at the Riverview Complex. Rohe went 7-for-8 for the doubleheader with three RBI’s, four stolen bases and she scored five runs. Timmins was the winning pitcher in both games and went 3-for-7 for the night at the plate with two RBI’s. Gehlen won game one 3-0 with Timmins throwing a one-hit shutout with one walk and eleven strike outs. She allowed just one base runner after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. Rohe scored twice and drove in the third run with a double. The Lady Jays rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to win game two 14-5 behind a 17-hit attack. Rohe had four hits and drove in two runs. Timmins allowed four hits and struck out seven. Her two-run double put Gehlen ahead to stay in a four-run third inning. Five more runs in the fourth put the Lady Jays in front 9-2 and they were never headed. Abby Freking had three doubles and four RBI’s in game two for Gehlen. Alex Willman had three of the Spartans five hits for the night. Gehlen improves to 19-and-10 for the season and 12-and-6 in the War Eagle Conference.

(LE MARS) — Tommy Stoll’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh snapped a 5-5 tie and a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh preserved the lead, lifting Spalding Catholic to a 6-5 War Eagle Conference baseball win over Gehlen Catholic Tuesday night at the Riverview Complex. The win was the ninth straight for the Spartans as they improve to 16-and-9 for the season and 11-and=4 in the W-E-C race. The game saw three lead changes and two ties before Spalding won it in the seventh. Michael Whitehead’s two-run homer in the first put Gehlen in front 2-1. The Spartans regained a 3-2 advantage on Tyler Konz’s two-run single in the second. Tanner Christoffel’s home run in the third extended Spalding’s lead to 4-2. Eric Oetken tied the game in the Gehlen third with a two-run double and a passed ball in the fourth gave the Jays a 5-4 lead. The Spartans tied the game at 5-all on Austin Schmit’s RBI ground out in the sixth. Tyler Konz got the win in relief while Mitchell Flack took the loss. Gehlen falls to 10-and-12 for the season and 8-and-8 in the W-E-C.

(LE MARS) — Janessa Milbrodt and Molly Renken teamed up on a three-hitter but had to survive nine walks to pitch Le Mars to a 7-3 Lakes Conference softball win over Spencer Wednesday night at the Bulldog Complex. Emily Pick homered for Le Mars and Ashley Phelan and Madison Heidebrink had two hits each to lead a nine-hit attack. Le Mars improves to 25-and-9 for the season and 9-and-3 in league play.
Gehlen Catholic (20-10/13-6) 8 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 3
(HARTLEY) — Gehlen Catholic earned their 20th victory of the season, winning 8-3 at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference match-up Wednesday night. The Lady Jays collected five of their ten hits in a four-run second inning and then added four more runs in the fourth. Lisa Gunter’s three-run homer was the key fourth inning blow. Gunter also had a double to join Alison Schnepf with two hits for Gehlen. Shannon Smith had two RBI’s for the Lady Jays. Amber Timmins threw a five-hitter with seven strike outs. Gehlen is 20-and-10 for the season and 13-and-6 in the War Eagle Conference.

(LE MARS) — Tenth-rated (3A) Le Mars clinched their second straight Lakes Conference baseball title Wednesday night, riding Colan Bochers’ three-hit, ten strike out pitching performance to a 6-1 victory over Spencer at the Bulldog Complex. Borchers lost his shutout bid on a two-out error in the seventh inning. Andy Heffner and Chris Eckstaine had two-run singles to lead the Bulldogs offensively and Jacob Lemoreux and Kendall Candor added RBI hits. All six Bulldog runs scored on two-out hits. Le Mars improves to 19-and-5 for the season and 11-and-0 in league play with three conference games to play.
Gehlen Catholic (11-12/9-8) 13 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 6
(HARTLEY) — Gehlen Catholic returned to the win column Wednesday night, rapping out 15 hits enroute to a 13-6 War Eagle Conference baseball win at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Michael Whitehead and Blake Wiltgen had three hits and one RBI each to pace the Jays offensively. Whitehead had two doubles and Wiltgen had a two-base hit. Mitchell Flack and Eric Oetken had two RBI’s each. Blake Wiltgen and Eric Oetken combined on six-hitter with ten strike outs. Gehlen is now 11-and-12 for the season and 9-and-8 in the War Eagle Conference.

A four-run sixth inning completed the comeback. Chris Eckstaine and Parker Rolfes drove in a pair of runs and Andy Hefner had a key RBI double in the sixth. Levi TeBrink got the win in relief for the Bulldogs. The victory improves the number-ten rated (3A) Bulldogs record to 20-and-5 for the season.

(LE MARS) — Amber Timmins fired a two-hit shutout Friday night at the Riverview Complex to pitch the Gehlen Catholic Lady Jays to a 2-0 War Eagle Conference softball victory over Remsen St. Mary’s. It was sweet revenge for Timmins, who was roughed up for 16 hits by the Hawks in a 12-0, four-inning loss June 4 in Remsen. Lisa Gunter and Steph Rohe led an eight-hit Gehlen attack against Miranda Staab with two hits each. Gunter had a RBI. The Lady Jays scored a run in the first and another in the fifth. Gehlen finishes the regular season with a 21-and-10 record and finished at 14-and-6 in the War Eagle Conference.

(CHEROKEE) — Emily Ellefson and Janessa Milbrodt paced an eleven-hit offensive attack for Le Mars with three hits each to lead the Lady Bulldogs to an 11-3 Lakes Conference softball victory at Cherokee. Milbrodt drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Ellefson had two RBI’s and scored four runs. Ashley Phelan had two hits and a RBI. Milbrodt teamed up with Jayme Kelly on a three-hitter in the pitching circle with ten strike outs. Milbrodt worked the first four innings to get the win despite walking nine batters. Le Mars ran their season mark to 26-and-9, tying the school record for victories in a season, and the Lady Bulldogs are now 10-and-3 in the Lakes Conference.

(LE MARS) — Sophomore right-hander Matt Wesselman improved to 8-and-2 for the season, pitching a one-hit shutout to guide Remsen St. Mary’s past Gehlen Catholic 8-0 Friday night in War Eagle Conference baseball at the Riverview Complex in Le Mars. Wesselman allowed just two base runners through the first six innings before issuing his first two walks of the night in the seventh. He finished the game with his fourth strike out. Wesselman also had two hits, including a two-run single in the Hawks six-run second inning. Andrew Pottebaum also had a two-run double in the second inning. Tyler Delperdang and Cody Colling two hits each for the Hawks, joining Wesselman as the only batters with multiple-hits. Michael Whitehead took the loss for Gehlen. Whitehead allowed six hits, three walks and three hit-batters. Eric Oetken worked the final three innings for the Jays. Solomon Freking had lone Gehlen hit in the game, a solid single to center field in the third. Gehlen falls to 11-and-13 for the season and 9-and-9 in league play while St. Mary’s improves to 19-and-7 for the season and 12-and-4 in the conference. The two old rivals split their four games played during the regular season. If there is a fifth meeting this season it will be in the Sub-State finals.

(CHEROKEE) — The Lakes Conference champion Le Mars Bulldogs rode the five-hit pitching performance of Parker Rolfes to a 4-1 victory over last place Cherokee Friday night in Cherokee. The Dogs scored two runs in the third and added two more in the seventh to extend a 2-1 lead. Hunter Rowe paced a seven-hit attack with two hits while Dayton Rand and Parker Rolfes drove in runs for Le Mars. The Bulldogs, rated tenth this week in the Class 3A poll, are 21-and-5 for the season and 12-and-0 in league play.

(ESTHERVILLE) — Starting pitcher Molly Renken has been used sparingly for the last two weeks due to a leg injury. The Le Mars junior returned to the pitching circle Saturday afternoon and fired a four-hit shutout with four walks and seven strike outs to pitch the Lady Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory over number-six (3A) Estherville/Lincoln Central in a make-up Lakes Conference softball match-up at Estherville. The victory allowed Le Mars to claim a share of the Lakes Conference title with the Midgettes at 11-and-3 and set a new school record for victories in a season with their 27th win. The offense Saturday came from the Lady Bulldogs top two run producers this summer, Emily Ellefson and Madison Heidebrink. Ellefson snapped a scoreless tie with a third inning RBI double and Heidebrink followed with a RBI single to score Ellefson. Both finished with two hits while Ashley Phelan led Le Mars ten-hit attack with four singles. Le Mars takes a 27-and-9 record into their tournament opener next Saturday against the winner of Thursday’s game between Storm Lake and Spencer. Saturday’s game will be at the Bulldog Complex.

(LE MARS) — The number-ten (3A) Le Mars Bulldogs rode the four-hit pitching performance of senior Chris Eckstaine to a 12-1 victory over visiting Glenwood Saturday afternoon in a game shortened to five inning by the ten-run rule. Eckstaine lost his shutout bid in the Rams final at-bat in the fifth. Eckstaine also drove in three runs at the plate Saturday. Kendall Candor led a nine-hit Bulldog attack with three hits and two RBI’s while Jacob Lemoreux added two hits and two RBI’s. Colan Borchers had two hits and Andy Hefner finished with two RBI’s. Le Mars takes a 22-and-5 record into a Monday night varsity doubleheader with Estherville/Lincoln Central at the Bulldog Complex. The Bulldogs have already clinched their second consecutive league title but look to finish unbeaten in the league play. Both games Monday will be carried on KLEM starting at 5:25.
