(HINTON) — 14th-rated (2A) Hinton used a 12-0 surge during a 19-3 run in the final ten minutes of the game that took a four-point lead and turned it into a 19-point spread and the Blackhawks beat number ten (1A) Gehlen Catholic 56-43 Thursday night in a War Eagle Conference matchup in Hinton. Lauren Hedlund led the Blackhawks with 19 points with Shaeler Lund adding 15 and Alex Yoerger had 10. Hannah Sitzmann had career-best 15 for Gehlen with Katelin Langel collecting 12 points and Emily Holtgrewe nine. Hinton improves to 8-and-1 with their seventh straight win and 5-and-0 in the conference. Gehlen is now 8-and-2 for the season with a 4-and-2 War Eagle Conference mark. For Hinton, the win was their 28th straight in the series dating back to Gehlen’s last win in the 1998-99 season. Gehlen travels to Remsen St. Mary’s Tuesday while the Blackhawks host state-rated West Sioux next Tuesday.

(ESTHERVILLE) — Le Mars began the New Year in Estherville for a Lakes Conference doubleheader against Estherville/Lincoln Central. The third-ranked E-L-C Midgettes scored the first nine points of the game and led by 20 by the end of the first quarter enroute to a 59-23 win over the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs. E-L-C led 38-9 by halftime and went up by 35 after three quarters, introducing a continous clock throughout the fourth quarter. Sara Heyward and Allie Seivert led a balanced Midgette scoring attack with 12 each and Emily Kirchner added 11. Carolyn Ahlers and Meredith Rand had six each to lead Le Mars. The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 3-and-7 for the season and 3-and-3 in the Lakes Conference. In the boys game, Le Mars rolled to a 27-14 lead in the first quarter and led 42-24 by halftime before settling on 77-55 victory over the Midgets. Jake Irwin led the Bulldog scoring attack with 19 points with Kyle Dolph adding another 14, Parker Rolfes and Tyler Paulson had eight each. Tyler Swanson and Matt Burrell had 13 each for E-L-C. Le Mars improves to 6-and-3 for the season and 5-and-1 in the Lakes. The Bulldogs won both JV games Friday night, 32-20 in the girls game behind Holly Schneider’s 14 points and 52-32 in the boys game with Caleb Cline leading the way with 17. Le Mars hosts Sergeant Bluff-Luton Monday night at the new gym. The doubleheader will be carried on KLEM.
(SIOUX CITY) — Gehlen Catholic opened second half play with their seventh straight victory, returning from the holiday break with a 74-64 War Eagle Conference victory over the Hinton Blackhawks Friday night at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The game was part of a five-game C-N-O-S Classic schedule. The Jays built an 18-point lead in the third quarter before Hinton rallied to within six with a little over a minute to play but the rally stalled and the Jays went onto win by ten, improving to 8-and-2 for the season and 6-and-0 in the W-E-C. Michael Whitehead had 28 points for Gehlen with Blake Wiltgen adding 14 and Colton Kneip 12. Jason Vander Kooi had 22 to lead the Blackhawks. Gehlen returns to action Tuesday at Remsen St. Mary’s, a twinbill that will be featured on KLEM. Hinton hosts West Sioux Tuesday night in their next outing.
