(LE MARS) — Brady Heying and Solomon Freking combined on a three-hit shutout to pitch No. 3 (1A) Gehlen Catholic to an 8-0 win over Akron-Westfield in War Eagle Conference baseball action at the Riverview Complex Monday night. Heying pitched the first six innings and recorded six strike outs. Freking worked the seventh and struck out the side. Seniors Mitchell Flack and Austin Herbst combined for five hits and four RBI’s on ‘Seniors Night’ for Gehlen. Flack had three hits and two RBI’s and Herbst had two hits and two RBI’s. The Jays and Westerners play again next Tuesday in the 1A District quarterfinals at the Rivereview Complex. Gehlen improves to 23-and-2 for the season and 14-and-1 in the W-E-C. Akron-Westfield slips to 11-and-15 for the season and 8-and-10 in conference play. Caleb Colt took the loss for A-W, working 5 2/3 innings and giving up eleven hits. Dylan Irizarry had two of the Westerners three hits.
(HULL) — Le Mars’ Colan Borchers turned in one of his most dominant pitching performances of his senior season Monday night in Hull, striking out a career-high 17 batters while walking one and allowing just one hit in a 7-0 win over Western Christian in a Lakes Conference baseball match-up in Hull. Brant Vant Hul had the lone hit for the Wolfpack. The Bulldogs scored four runs over the final two innings to break up a 3-0 pitcher’s duel. Dayton Rand and Colan Borchers led a six-hit Le Mars attack with two hits each. The Bulldogs improve to 12-and-12 for the season and 10-and-3 in Lakes Conference play.

(LE MARS) — Miles Ludwig allowed just two hits and No. 10 (3A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton backed her with a 15-hit attack as the Warriors beat Le Mars for the third time this summer, 17-2, Monday night at the Bulldog Complex. Holly Schneider slugged a two-run homer in the first inning for Le Mars to stake the Lady Bulldogs to an early lead before S-B-L got going offensively. The game ended in four innings on the ‘Mercy Rule’. Grace Milbrodt had a pinch single in the fourth inning for the only other Le Mars hits. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 18-and-16 for the season and play host to Storm Lake Thursday night in the 4A Regional quarterfinals. The game will double as a Lakes Conference make-up game between the two schools.

(LE MARS) — Glenwood drilled Le Mars 11-4 Tuesday night in a non-conference baseball match-up at the Bulldog Complex. Sophomore Cameron Leff had a rough outing, giving up seven hits and nine runs in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out ten. Riley Magnussen finished the game in relief for Le Mars. Wyatt Schultz went the distance for the Rams, despite giving up ten hits. The Bulldogs were victimized by their defense once again, committing five errors. Mitch Timp led the offense with three hits and one RBI. He also scored three runs. Dayton Rand had a pair of doubles. Le Mars falls to 12-and-13 for the season.
(HARTLEY) — Jarod Steffes tossed a three-hit shutout with one walk and five strike outs as No. 5 (1A) Gehlen Catholic rolled past Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 12-0 in six innings Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference baseball action in Hartley. That sets up a showdown with No. 4 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s Wednesday night in Remsen for the War Eagle Conference title. Both have one loss in league play. The Jays improved their season record to 24-and-2 and their W-E-C mark to 15-and-1 with the victory Tuesday in Hartley. Gehlen had 15 hits Tuesday night with Lucas Hunt leading the offensive onslaught with three. He scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Blake Wiltgen had two RBI’s, Ryan Stoll drove in two runs on a pair of hits, and Ty Kurth and Brady Heying had two hits and a RBI each.

(REMSEN) — No. 4 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s beat No. 5 (1A) Gehlen Catholic for the second time in nine days Wednesday night in Remsen, winning their War Eagle Conference baseball match-up, 5-4. The two victories over the Jays gives the Hawks the War Eagle Conference title for 2014. St. Mary’s jumped on Gehlen starter Mitchell Flack for five runs in the first three innings to take a 5-1 lead. The Jays closed to within 5-3 with two runs in the fourth and scored once in the seventh and had runners on first and second when winning pitcher Elliott Conover halted the rally with a popup to pick up a complete game victory. Conover scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out six. Matt Wesselmann and Brad Roling led the Hawks at the plate with two hits each. Ryan Stoll and Solomon Freking had two hits each for Gehlen Catholic. The Jays stranded ten base runners in the game. Remsen St. Mary’s improves to 25-and-4 for the season and 18-and-1 in the W-E-C. The Hawks wrap up the regular season Thursday at home against West Sioux. Gehlen Catholic slips to 24-and-3 for the season and 15-and-2 in the War Eagle Conference. The Jays close out the regular season Thursday at Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union.
(SERGEANT BLUFF) — Thomas Wisecup starred on the mound and at the plate to lead Sergeant Bluff-Luton to a 16-3, five inning non-conference baseball win over Le Mars Wednesday night in Sergeant Bluff. Wisecup threw a four inning four-hitter with five strike outs. At the plate, Wisecup drove in six runs with a pair of RBI singles and a grand slam homer. Caleb Cline had two of the Bulldogs four hits. Le Mars falls to 12-and-14 for the season and host No. 6 (3A) Harlan in a varsity doubleheader Friday. S-B-L improves to 16-and-10. The two play in the same 3A District Tournament next Friday in Sergeant Bluff.

CLASS 1A REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS
(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic scored eight runs in the fourth inning to erase a 7-2 deficit and broke the game open with six more runs in the sixth to win their 1A Regional opener, 16-8 over Harris-Lake Park Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex. Jill Kessenich keyed the eight-run fourth with a two run single to give Gehlen an 8-7 lead and Allie Hansen capped the inning with a two-run single to put the Lady Jays in front 10-7 heading into the fifth. The Wolves closed to within 10-8 with a run in the fifth but a grandslam by Bailey Wiltgen capped a six-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Emily Pratt had three hits before leaving the game with an injured knee. Her status for the remainder of the postseason is in doubt. Jill Kessenich also had three hits as Gehlen finished with 18 hits and took advantage of four Harris-Lake Park errors. Meghen Heying had a rough start, giving up seven runs on 13 hits in the first five innings. But she finished strong, retiring eight of the final nine batters she faced, to get the win in the pitcher’s circle. Senior Macy Gunderson took the loss but had a pretty good night at the plate for the Wolves with four hits and three RBI’s. Gehlen takes a 17-and-15 record to Akron Friday to play top-rated Akron-Westfield (33-and-0) in the 1A semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday’s game also served as War Eagle Conference counting game. Gehlen finished fourth in the W-E-C at 12-and-8 while H-L-P finished 8-and-12 in league play and 13-and-19 for the season.

(MARCUS) — Ryan Stoll drove in five runs and Blake Wiltgen tossed a five-inning four-hitter to guide No. 5 (1A) Gehlen Catholic to a 15-2 win over Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union in the regular season finale for the Jays Thursday night in Marcus. Solomon Freking and Lucas Hunt had three hits each for Gehlen Catholic. The Jays end the regular season at 25-and-3 and finish at 16-and-2 in the War Eagle Conference. Gehlen plays Akron-Westfield at the Riverview Complex next Tuesday in the 1A Districts.

CLASS 4A REGIONAL QUARTERFINALS
(LE MARS) — Jenessa Milbrodt tossed a five-inning no-hitter and Kassidy Rieken came a triple short of hitting for the cycle, driving in five runs, as Le Mars advanced in the 4A Regional softball tournament with a 14-0 win over Storm Lake Thursday night at the Bulldog Complex. Milbrodt finished with four walks and ten strike outs to improve to 9-and-10 for the summer. Rieken had a two-run single to key a five-run second inning for Le Mars and belted a three-run homer in the fourth. She capped her 3-for-4 night at the plate with a fifth inning double to lead a 12-hit attack. Crystal Eppling swatted a two-run homer, her sixth of the season. Eppling also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to finish with three RBI’s. Milbrodt and Andrea Urban also added two hits each. Le Mars takes a 19-and-16 record into Saturday’s semifinals against Bishop Heelan at the Bulldog Complex at 7 p.m. The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 6:50.

(LE MARS) — No. 6 (3A) Harlan claimed a doubleheader sweep over Le Mars Friday, winning the first game 6-2 and outlasting the Dogs in game two, 11-10 at the Bulldog Complex. A three-run fourth inning broke up a 2-2 tie in game one to send Harlan to a 6-2 win in the opener. Brett Croghan teamed up with Josh Cheek on a four-hitter for the Cyclones. Cheek earned a save with two innings of hitless shutout relief. Dayton Rand, who took the loss on the mound, had a RBI-double to lead Le Mars offensively. Game two was a wild see-saw battle that Harlan won with a run in the sixth to break a 10-all tie. Harlan scored five in the first before Le Mars countered with two in the second and five in the third to take a 7-5 lead. Harlan went back in front with three runs in the fifth but Le Mars tied it with two runs in their half of the fifth. The Bulldogs outhit Harlan 19-9 in game two. Matt Ellefson had four hits, including a double, and three RBI’s to pace the Bulldogs offensively. Keaton Candor also drove in three runs with a pair of hits, including a double. The loss went to reliever Race Streker. He combined with starter Riley Magnussen to walk seven. Le Mars falls to 12-and-16 for the season.

CLASS 1A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
(AKRON) — Senior Kayla Tindall belted two home runs and combined with Dana Hedlund on a three-hitter and eleven strike outs to lead top-rated Akron-Westfield to an 11-2 1A Regional tournament softball victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night in Akron. The win puts the defending State champion Westerners in the Regional finals Monday night in Cherokee against Newell-Fonda. Tindall opened the game by clubbing the first pitch over the left field fence. Gehlen tied the game when their lead-off hitter, Jill Kessenich, hit her first career homer in the bottom of the first. Sarah Schroeder’s RBI single in the second put Akron-Westfield back in front by a run. Tindall’s second home run of game, a two-run shot to dead center, capped a five-run fourth inning that put A-W in front 7-1. Bethany Eastman had a two-run single just before Tindall’s team-leading fifth home run of season. Schroeder added a two-run single in the sixth, giving her three RBI’s for the game and the Westerners an 11-1 cushion. Gehlen averted a ten-run rule verdict in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run on Bailey Wiltgen’s RBI single to extend the game to a full seven innings. Kessenich opened the sixth for the Lady Jays with a bunt single, giving her two of Gehlen’s three hits. Tindall finished with a two-hitter with two walks and eight strike outs in 5 innings. Hedlund gave up Wiltgen’s single before retiring the final six batters of game. She struck out three. Akron-Westfield improved to 34-and-0 while Gehlen finishes the season at 17-and-16.

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs claimed their fourth straight Lakes Conference baseball title Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Storm Lake in a make-up conference game at the Bulldog Complex. Colan Borchers limited the Tornadoes to four hits and one walk with 15 strike outs to improve his pitching record to 5-and-2. Le Mars took a 2-0 lead in the third on a RBI double by Keaton Candor and a bases loaded walk to Colan Borchers. Storm Lake cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth on a RBI single by Chase Lange. Two errors, a walk and a sacrifice fly by Candor brought in two insurance runs in the sixth for the Bulldogs. Le Mars finishes the Lakes Conference season at 11-and-3, a game ahead of Spencer, and improves to 13-and-16 for the season. The Bulldogs play host to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Monday in a jv-varsity doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.

The Lady Bulldogs broke a 6-all tie with three runs in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and a two-run single by Kassidy Rieken. Le Mars built a 6-0 lead in the first two innings before the Crusaders stormed back with five runs in the third and another in the fifth to tie the game. Crystal Eppling put Le Mars in front 1-0 on a single in the first inning. Three more runs scored on Jessica Van Otterloo’s bases-loaded squeeze bunt and a throwing error to first base for a 4-0 lead going into the second inning. Madison Heidebrink extended the lead to 6-0 with a two-run homer to dead center in the second. RBI hits by Lexi Stolen, Jenna Bork and Bailey Heaton brought home four runs for Heelan in the third and another run scored on the Lady Bulldogs lone error of the game. The Crusaders tied the game in the fifth on a RBI ground out by Jaylee Lester. Janessa Milbrodt walked the lead-off hitter in the bottom of the seventh before retiring Heelan’s third, fourth and fifth place hitters to end the game. Milbrodt gave up six hits, walked four and struck out six to improve to 10-and-10 for the season. The loss was pinned on Emily Eaton, who relieved starter Lexi Ricke after Heidebrink’s home run in the second inning. Eaton limited Le Mars to one hit and just two base runners until they broke through for the three-run seventh inning. Le Mars takes a 20-and-16 record to the Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge Tuesday to play No. 2 Fort Dodge for a spot in the 4A State tournament. Bishop Heelan ends the season at 22-and-14.
