SAN FRANCISCO– Doug Fister tossed seven shutout innings and the Washington Nationals took advantage of Madison Bumgarner’s throwing error to beat the Giants 4-1 in San Francisco and avoid a three-game sweep in the National League Division Series. The game was scoreless in the seventh until Bumgarner threw away Wilson Ramos’ bunt attempt, allowing two runs to score. Fister allowed just four hits and improved to 4-2 with a 2.60 ERA lifetime in the postseason.
ST. LOUIS – Kolten Wong smacked a tiebreaking, two-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals took a two-games-to-one lead in the National League Division Series by topping the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wong went deep off Scott Elbert in the seventh, one inning after Hanley Ramirez tied the game for the Dodgers with an RBI double. Matt Carpenter homered for the third straight game and winning pitcher John Lackey allowed a run and five hits in six innings.

LANDOVER, Md. – The Seattle Seahawks picked up their ninth straight victory on Monday Night Football by grabbing an early 17-0 lead before holding off Washington 27-17. Russell Wilson rushed for a career-high 122 yards, including a nine-yard TD that put Seattle ahead 17-0 in the first half. He also completed 18 of 24 passes for 201 yards and two more scores for the 3-1 Seahawks.

ST. LOUIS – Matt Adams belted a go-ahead, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers and a berth in the National League Championship Series for the fourth consecutive year. The Cardinals were held to one hit by Clayton Kershaw through the first six innings before he gave up back-to-back singles and Adams’ blast. Kershaw surrendered nine runs in the seventh inning of his two starts in the series.
SAN FRANCISCO – Joe Panik scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning as the San Francisco Giants beat Washington 3-2 to advance to the National League Championship Series. The Giants overcame Bryce Harper’s RBI double and solo homer by scoring three runs without an RBI hit. Ryan Vogelsong combined with four relievers on a four-hitter as San Francisco moved into the NLCS for the third time in five seasons.

(SERGEANT BLUFF) — Connor Imming scored three first half touchdowns and Brady Wall returned a kick-off 94 yards for another score to lead Sergeant Bluff-Luton to a 48-36 victory over Le Mars Friday night in a Class 3A, District 1 football match-up in Sergeant Bluff. Imming hauled in an 82-yard TD-pass on the game’s first play from scrimmage to set the tone for the Warriors. Imming caught a 20-yard scoring pass on S-B-L’s second possession for a 14-0 lead just 3 1/2 minutes into the contest. Beau Ohm capped a 13 play, 65-yard drive with a one yard run for Le Mars to cut the deficit to 14-8 with 4:05 to play in the first quarter. But Wall ran the kick-off back and the Warriors back in front by two scores, 20-8. The two teams exchanged two scores each in the second quarter with Imming scoring on a 21-yard run and Austin Evans adding a five yard run for Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Ohm ran 42 yards for a Le Mars touchdown and Collin Nemmers hauled in a 74-yard TD-pass from Koster Buss to narrow a 34-14 deficit to 34-22 by halftime. Matt Ellefson scored on a 56-yard run 50-seconds into the second half for Le Mars to close the gap to 34-30. But Evans scored his second touchdown of the night for S-B-L on a 38 yard run for a 41-30 lead going into the fourth quarter. Le Mars gambled on a fourth down call from inside their own 15, but failed to convert a pass play and Sergeant Bluff-Luton capitalized with a short eleven-yard drive, capped by a two yard run by Matt George for a 48-30 advantage with 7:18 to play. Le Mars struck once more, using a gadget play to score from 48 yards away. Koster Buss completed a pass to Tyler Borchers at the Warriors’ 35 yard line and Borchers then handed off to Tyler Paulson who took the rest of the way with 3:24 to play. The two teams combined for 951 yards of offense, 487 for Sergeant Bluff-Luton and 464 yards for Le Mars. The Bulldogs threw for 275 yards while S-B-L ran for 380 yards. Le Mars falls to 3-and-4 for the season and 2-and-2 in the district and will make their final home appearance Friday night against Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.
LE MARS) — Senior Devin Tripp ran for a State record 553 yards on 33 carries and scored eight touchdowns Friday night to lead Sioux Central to a 64-32 victory over Gehlen Catholic, spoiling the Jays homecoming celebration at Jim Lorenzen Field. The Rebels rolled up 50 points by halftime and led 50-14 at the break. Gehlen did end a string of nine quarters without a point, scoring in the first quarter on an Alex Kellen-to-Solomon Freking TD pass. Gehlen’s J-V quarterback, Cooper Davis, threw for a touchdown and ran for another as coach Tony Gunter played out the string in the second half. The loss keeps Gehlen winless for the season at 0-and-7 and 0-and-5 in the district. The Jays make their final road trip of the 2014 season next Friday, travelling to Alta-Aurelia for a 7 o’clock kick-off. The game will be carried on KLEM.

BALTIMORE – Alcides Escobar sparked a two-run ninth as the Royals downed the Orioles 6-4 in Baltimore, putting Kansas City ahead two games to none in the American League Chamionship Series. Escobar supplied a tiebreaking, RBI double before scoring on Lorenzo Cain’s single. Cain went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Royals, who are 6-0 in the playoffs and own a nine-game postseason win streak since the 1985 World Series.
ST. LOUIS – Madison Bumgarner combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as San Francisco defeated St. Louis 3-0 in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. Bumgarner held the Cardinals to four hits while striking out seven over 7 2/3 innings. He also set a major league postseason record with 26 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.

IOWA CITY – Jake Rudock threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa rolled past Indiana 45-29 on Saturday for its third straight win.
Mark Weisman had a pair of short TD runs for the Hawkeyes (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten), who scored all but seven of their points in the first half.
AMES – Sam Richardson threw for a career-high 351 yards and three second-half touchdowns Saturday, rallying Iowa State to a 37-30 victory over Toledo.
Unable to finish drives in the first half, Richardson and the offense got rolling in the second half and gave the Cyclones (2-4) a much needed victory in a rare October break from Big 12 play.
Richardson finished with a school-record 37 completions in 53 attempts and connected with nine different receivers, including a lineman.

The St. Louis Cardinals rallied to nip San Francisco 5-4 on Kolten Wong’s walkoff homer in the ninth inning. That followed homers by pinch-hitter Oscar Tavaras in the seventh and by Matt Adams in the eighth for the Cards.
