MONDAY RESULTS – March 2

(high school basketball)

ORANGE CITY — The number six-rated Le Mars Bulldogs punched their ticket to the 3A State tournament Monday night with a 76-65 victory over number nine Spirit Lake in a Sub-State One championship game at Orange City.  Le Mars put up 27 fourth quarter points, thanks in part to hitting 16 of their 24 fourth quarter free throw opportunities, to offset six three-pointers by the Indians over the final eight minutes.  Spirit Lake finished with 12 three’s for the night, six each from Billy Brown and Alec Henrickson.  The desperation three-point bombardment by Spirit Lake couldn’t overcome a 13-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game.  The Bulldogs did a little three-point bombing of their own as sixth man, Mitch Sitzmann, hit five of the Bulldogs’ eight treys and finished with a career-best 15 points.  His three at the buzzer gave Le Mars a 13-11 lead after the first quarter.  He then closed the first half with another three to put the Bulldogs in front 32-25 at the break.  Spirit Lake began the second half by outscoring Le Mars 18-12 to close to within one at 44-43 with 1:21 to play in the third quarter.  But Trent Hilbrands hit his third three of the quarter to help the Dogs go back up by four in the final minute of the period and Le Mars took a 49-43 lead into the final period.  Le Mars pushed their fourth quarter lead to 11 by the 4:41 mark and the Indians never got closer than 8 after that.  Hilbrands led Le Mars with 21 points and Tyler Borchers added 20.  Billy Brown had 22 for Spirit Lake, Alec Henrickson 20 and Ryan Kriener 16.  Le Mars takes a 20-and-4 record to Des Moines were they’ll play in their first State tournament in 15 years next Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Dallas Center-Grimes (20-and-4).  It is the sixth State trip overall for Le Mars.
