The Ravens are 4-7 while the Browns slip to 2-9 after their sixth straight defeat.

LE MARS — Top-rated (2A) Unity Christian narrowly sidestepped an upset bid by the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night with a 55-52 victory at the Bulldogs new gym. Chanda Zomermaand connected on 5-of-6 free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold off a Le Mars charge. Unity went on 9-0 third quarter run to open up an 11-point lead before the Lady Bulldogs scrambled back to within 40-38 with seven minutes to play. The game was tight for the rest of the night. Senior all-stater, Anna Kiel, led Unity Christian with 32 points while Zomermaand added 11. Katrina Engebretson led Le Mars with 19 points with freshman Madison Dreckman adding 12 and Sidney Baumgartner and Jen Schneider had nine each. The loss drops Le Mars to 1-and-1 for the season. The defending Class 2A Iowa champion Knights are off to a 1-and-0 start after winning all 27 of their games last season.
The Le Mars boys opened the 2015-2016 season with a 64-53 win over Unity Christian Tuesday night in Le Mars. The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a 17-0 run to turn a seven-point deficit after three quarters into a 54-44 led with 4 1/2 minutes to play in the game. Will Pottebaum led a balanced Bulldog attack with 20 points while Trent Hilbrands added 19 and Jake Thompson 15. Luke Nieuwendorp had 14 for the Knights.
Le Mars travels to Hull Tuesday night to meet Western Christian in the Lakes Conference opener.

LE MARS — West Sioux spoiled Gehlen Catholic’s home opener Friday night by sweeping a basketball doubleheader from the Jays, 74-38 in the girls game and 56-48 in the boys contest. In the girls game, West Sioux used a 14-0 run to erase a 9-3 deficit four minutes into the game and never trailed after that, winning by 36 points. Amanda Mace led the way offensively with 21 points while Taylor Rodenburgh added 20 and Ally Westra chipped in another 10. Jaci Alesch had 10 for Gehlen Catholic, which falls to 0-and-2 for the season. In the boys game, West Sioux jumped to an early 8-0 lead and never trailed, building a 17-point lead at the 3:22 mark of the third quarter. Gehlen scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to claw their way back to within eight by the end of the game. Porter Hummel led the way for the Falcons with 22 points while Kezden Blankenship added 19. Carson Kneip had 14 for the Jays in their season opener. Gehlen travels to Hinton Saturday afternoon to make-up Tuesday’s postponed doubleheader.

SIOUX CITY — Quarterback Tanner Trosin converted a fourth-and-four quarterback draw with 1:15 left in the game, scoring from five yards out to give No. 7 Southern Oregon a dramatic 30-27 victory over No. 1 Morningside Saturday at Olsen Stadium in the N-A-I-A playoff semifinals. The loss ends the Mustangs’ bid for an elusive national title. The lead changed hands six times throughout the afternoon and the outcome wasn’t decided until Morningside missed a 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds that could have sent the game into overtime. Former Gehlen standout Michael Whitehead hauled in a 12-yard TD-pass from Ryan Kasdorf to give Morningside an early 7-0 lead. Whitehead had five catches for 58 yards. Tyler Kavan ran for three Mustang touchdowns with his one-yard scoring run with 9:12 to play gave Morningside their final lead.

INDIANAPOLIS — L.J. Scott kept lunging forward, stretching the ball over the goal line for a touchdown with 27 seconds and No. 5 Michigan State all but locked up a spot in the College Football Playoff, edging No. 4 Iowa 16-13 Saturday in the Big Ten championship game. Connor Cook led the Spartans (12-1) on a 22-play drive that set up Scott’s 1-yard run. A half-dozen Iowa defenders tried to stop Scott, but he wouldn’t be denied. Iowa (12-1) lost for the first time this season — and just barely. Five times in the final 2 minutes, the Spartans snapped the ball from the Iowa 5-yard line or closer. Finally, after getting bottled up by three defenders on third-and-goal from the 1, Scott broke free just long enough to get the ball across the goal line for Michigan State’s only TD. The 82-yard march wiped out Iowa’s 13-9 lead, which it got on an 85-yard pass from C.J. Beathard to Tevaun Smith.

HINTON — The Hinton Blackhawks swept a make-up basketball doubleheader from Gehlen Catholic Saturday afternoon in Hinton, winning the girls game 75-31 before taking the boys game 64-49. The outcome leaves the Gehlen girls at 0-and-3 while the Gehlen boys fall to 0-and-2. Senior Kailey Burke dropped in 17 of her game-high 29 points in the first quarter as Hinton jumped out to a 25-3 lead. They extended the lead to 34 by halftime and 38 after three quarters before settling on a 44-point victory. Bryce Klein added 19 points to the Blackhawk cause while Jolee Linden led Gehlen with 13. Hinton improves to 3-and-1 for the season. Jay Small led the Hinton boys to a 15-point victory with 21 points while Collin Jurgensmeier and Ross Johnson added 14 points each. Alec Langel had a career-best 17 points for Gehlen. Hinton is off to a 2-and-0 start. The Gehlen boys travel to Remsen-Union Monday night for a jv/varsity doubleheader with the Rockets before both the girls and boys teams travel to Akron Tuesday night for their first War Eagle Conference games. Hinton opens conference play Tuesday at home against South O’Brien.
