The Gehlen Catholic softball season opened up on the right foot yesterday with an 8-0 win over West Sioux in Le Mars. The Lady Jays got a great outing in the circle from junior pitcher, Rylee Schnepf to the tune of seven innings, four hits, one walk, and striking out nine batters. Schnepf also came through at the plate by capping off a four-run third with a two-run double off the left field wall.
The Jays also got two RBIs at the plate from Emily Kellen who went 2-4, and an RBI from Alyssa Kolbeck who went 3-4 on the night. Gehlen Catholic Head Coach Tony Gunter says that Schnepf’s early success came from being very accurate with her pitches.
Gunter knows he’s got a reliable arm in the circle that can work her way out of most sticky situations.
The Gehlen Catholic starting 9 is young, but Gunter was pleased with what he saw out of his young team to begin the season.
The Jays will take their 1-0 record on the road to Akron on Wednesday to take on the eighth-rated Westerners. This is the same team that ended Gehlen’s season last year. Gunter will be expressing the importance of using the whole field while hitting leading up to Wednesday’s game.
The Jays will be at Akron-Westfield on Wednesday and at Unity Christian on Friday.
