Remsen St. Mary’s picked up a shutout win last night over Gehlen Catholic by a final of 5-0.
The Hawks picked things up in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning with eight hitters coming to the plate. The Hawks got an RBI from Tori Galles and Mya Bunkers and two RBIs from Carly Ortmann in the second to go in front 4-0. The inning was a result of the adjustment Head Coach Monte Harpenau has been trying to make with his team.
The Hawks and Jays kept it 4-0 through most of the game until the fifth when Carmindee Ricke opened up the inning by reaching in a hit by pitch and coming around to score on an RBI base hit from Claire Schroeder. That would be all the Hawks needed as they went on to win 5-0.
Marina Cronin was a star on the mound pitching a complete game shutout giving up three hits and striking out four. Cronin started off the game with a no-hitter through the first four and two thirds innings. Coach Harpenau paid attention to the five walks that Cronin allowed and was pleased to see the freshman work out of some jams.
Ortmann’s two RBIs in the second inning helped give the Hawks the large lead that they didn’t let go of. Coach Harpenau says that this is a side of her game that he has gotten used to for years.
With the win, the Hawks are now 17-4 and are scheduled to finish the regular season on Wednesday with a conference game at home against West Sioux. The Hawks will then wait a week for their first playoff game on Wednesday, July 7th against either Kingsley-Pierson or Whiting.
