Le Mars Drops Both Games at Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln

Le Mars basketball traveled to Council Bluffs and were handed a girls and boys basketball sweep on the road from Council Bluffs AL.

The Bulldog ladies fell to open the evening by a final of 63-40. Things were going good for the Bulldogs who trailed by eight at halftime. Then, the wheels fell off and Le Mars was outscored 31-16 in the second half alone. Bulldog head coach Cody Dyrhkopp says that his team just didn’t have the fire in the second half.

One bright spot on the evening was the play of Jaelyn Marienau. The freshman opened the contest hitting four three-point field goals in a row. She finished with 17 points to lead the Bulldogs. Coach Dyhrkopp says that this is only the beginning of what she can contribute on the floor.

The Bulldogs are now 6-9 overall and 5-4 in the MRAC. Le Mars heads home on Tuesday to take on second-ranked Bishop Heelan.

The Bulldog boys were handed a loss by the fifth-ranked Lynx of Council Bluffs AL 52-33.

The game took a backseat though to an injury that occurred late in the fourth quarter. McDonald’s All-American nominee, Iowa Hawkeye recruit, and Council Bluffs AL’s top scorer Josh Dix went up to block a layup from the Bulldogs. He landed on the floor and remained there for around ten minutes while his leg was attended to. It was an injury that shook the gym to its core. Bulldog Coach Dave Irwin has enormous praise for the player and person that Dix is.

The game was called with 1:45 left in the game to allow the medical personnel to do their job in an empty environment. Coach Irwin says that decision was his call. This injury also hit home with Irwin.

Getting back to the basketball game. Coach Irwin says that he was proud of how his team competed with one of the best teams in the state.

Le Mars fell to 8-6 on the year and 5-3 in the MRAC. The Bulldogs will host Bishop Heelan on Tuesday.
