Gehlen Catholic Boys Basketball Falls to Boyden-Hull in District Quarterfinals

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team fell in an elimination game to Boyden-Hull in the district quarterfinal Monday night by a score of 61-56.

The Jays came out with fire coming off their fingertips going 7-11 from the field with 20 points in the first quarter. That offensive success led to defensive success in the form of turnovers forced against Boyden-Hull in the first quarter. Head coach Ryan Wiltgen says no matter the score, he knows his team fought hard and never backed down.

The Jays had an eight-point lead in the first half, but it got flipped into a one-point Boyden-Hull lead by the end of the half. That meant Gehlen had to change some things up to try and get the momentum back to their favor. Coach Wiltgen says the Jays had to change defenses, and it did a good job of throwing the Comets off their game in the second half.

Boyden-Hull ultimately won the game with their hot shooting and ability to get to the free throw line. The Comets went 11-22 from long range and 14-17 from the free-throw line. Coach Wiltgen says the Comets earned those opportunities.

The Jays end their season with a record of 9-13 and graduate six seniors off the roster. Coach Wiltgen says this class was a special one for sticking with the program even when they did not get the playing time.

Boyden-Hull advances to take on Remsen St. Mary’s in the district semifinal on Thursday night in Remsen.
