Makena Junkin cruises to individual championship in 2024 Northwest Iowa National Invitational

The individual women’s title at this week’s Northwest Iowa National Invitational golf tournament in Le Mars was never really in doubt.

Texas Wesleyan University’s Makena Junkin led the field start to finish to claim the individual title finishing eight strokes under par. With the Rams being a mainstay at the tournament, Junkin has gotten to compete at Willow Creek last year as a freshman. She says that experience helped her improve her outing as a sophomore to win the tournament.

The win continues a strong start for Junkin who also won the individual title at Texas Wesleyan’s season-opening meet in Fort Worth. She says this start can be credited to the hard work she has put into her game.

Junkin ends up with the trophy as an individual, but she knows well that any one of her other five teammates could have been there too. Three of her teammates joined her in the top-five showing the dominance of the program. Junkin says there is some friendly competition on the team, but, ultimately, they all want the team to be successful.

Junkin was like many golfers in town this week who enjoyed their time. The Burleson, Texas native says everything about the tournament, including the ice cream, makes it a special opportunity.

Junkin will join her Ram teammates in competing next on their home course in Fort Worth at a meet on Monday, September 23.
