Le Mars United Way Golf Tournament Kicks Off Annual Campaign
The 21st annual Le Mars United Way golf tournament was held at Willow Creek Golf Course yesterday (Thursday, August 28.) The event marked the kick-off for the current fiscal year fundraising campaign.
Kyon Ludwig, Le Mars United Way Board Chair, says every donation goes to help people right here in the Le Mars Community and Plymouth County.
This year, approximately $200,000 was awarded to 31 programs run by local agencies. To determine funding, local board members spent time visiting the agencies and discussing how United Way funds could be effectively used to provide safety net services or ensure that children grow into successful adults, the two focus areas for Le Mars United Way.

Le Mars Holiday Tree Display to Move to the Museum
The Plymouth County Historical Museum will be taking over the Christmas tree display that has been held at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds. Museum Administrator Jennifer Scholten says they will call it the “Festival of Trees.”
Scholten said the Festival of Trees will also be open for Christmas in Hometown Le Mars Thanksgiving weekend.
Flyers will be sent out soon to businesses and groups who would want to decorate a tree for this holiday event.

Big Sioux River Days
Big Sioux River Days in Hawarden is underway through Monday.
Tonight features a West Sioux Hall of Fame induction during halftime of the high school football game against Sheldon.
There’s an outdoor vendor show and a “Quilt and Create Art Show” Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The schedule also includes a Saturday morning Color Run at 10 a.m..
Sunday highlights include the Little Miss Big Sioux River Days crowning ceremony at 1 p.m.
On Labor Day Monday there’s a Kids Parade at 1:15 followed by the Grand Parade at 1:30 p.m. with park activities following the parade.

Citizen’s Academy Applications
Applications are available beginning September 1st at the Le Mars Police Department and Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office for this year’s Citizen’s Academy
The Citizen’s Academy is a 4-week program, starting Tuesday October 14th. The 8 class sessions are designed to provide residents with information about local law enforcement and how it operates. Participants will learn about daily law enforcement operations and become familiar with the Department’s policing philosophy.
Topics will include use of force, crime scene investigations, OWI, firearms, police investigations, law and much more. This is a free academy open to Plymouth County residents.
Applications must be returned on or before September 30, 2025.
