Le Mars run-off election is tomorrow

Voters will head to the polls tomorrow, as the race for mayor and for a seat on the Le Mars city council will be at stake.

In the mayoral race, incumbent Rob Bixenman will seek another term as mayor of Le Mars, with Brian Hughes challenging. During the November 4th election, Bixenman received more votes than Hughes, but did not reach over 50% of the vote, necessitating a run-off. In the race for the at-large seat on the city council, Derek Conyers and Beth Meyer will run against each other a second time. Conyers received the most votes during last month’s election, but also did not reach more than 50%. Meyer reached the run-off election after receiving more votes than third-place finisher Lenny Flack.

Polling locations, hours, and registration will be the same as last month’s elections. For those that requested an absentee ballot prior to November 17th, absentee ballots must be received by the Plymouth County Auditor’s Office by 8pm tomorrow to be counted. Today is the last day to cast a ballot in person at the Plymouth County Courthouse prior to Election Day, with ballots accepted until 5pm.

According to the Plymouth County Auditor’s Office, 540 ballots have been cast as of Wednesday afternoon. For questions about the run-off election, contact the Auditor’s Office.

Remsen’s Olde Fashioned Christmas is tonight

Old-fashioned Christmas fun is returning to Remsen, with Remsen’s Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration kicking off tonight.

The annual event has taken place since 2003, when the town of Remsen revived an old Christmastime tradition, according to Tammy Portz, a committee member for Olde Fashioned Christmas.

The schedule of events features the lighting of the 30 foot tall Christmas tree, the “Blessing of the Season” around the tree by local clergymen, and the arrival of Santa on a city fire truck. Train rides and horse drawn wagon rides will be available, along with most downtown stores hosting events of their own. Portz says the festival is a great way for the community to come together.

Remsen’s Olde Fashioned Christmas takes place on tonight starting at 5:30pm in downtown Remsen. More information is available on the Olde Fashioned Christmas Facebook page.
