The Le Mars Community bowling teams opened their seasons with wins at home over Sioux City West on Monday night.
The Bulldog girls defeated the Wolverines by a score of 2644-1659 with a little bit of a slow start to the year. It was the first meet of the year, but the Bulldogs still have high expectations for their performances. Head coach Gary Brady says the girls did not bowl bad, but they just did not bowl great either.
Le Mars brings back a lot of talent from last year’s state runner-up team, but the first meet saw some new faces step up. Brianna Bockelmann was the top individual bowler while Maddalyn Jarrard was second-best individual in her first varsity meet. Coach Brady says both impressed in their early season performance.
The baker games left a little to be desired with the Bulldogs putting up just 805 in five games. Coach Brady says being able to spare frames is crucial to success, and that will be the focus of the next few days of practice.
On the boys side, the Bulldogs beat Sioux City West 2910-2531. It was the first competition for the Bulldogs on the boys side, and it looked like it. Head coach Travis Jones says outside of the things that need working on, the guys were upbeat and confident to start the year.
Le Mars’ baker games helped carry them across the finish line over West. The Bulldogs scored 1084 in their baker games with two of their five scoring above 255. Coach Jones says those games have to be good to set a foundation in future matches.
The biggest thing for the Bulldogs is the continuous pursuit of improvement. Le Mars will continue to hammer out the little things to keep getting better. Coach Jones says a lot of that will consist of spare work.
Both Bulldog bowling teams start 1-0. They both head to Ida Grove on Thursday, December 12 to take on OABCIG.
