FRIDAY RESULTS - September 5

(high school football)

LE MARS -- Jay Small ran for one score and threw for another to lead the Hinton Blackhawks to a 35-0 win over Gehlen Catholic Friday night at Jim Lorenzen Field in non-district high school football action.  Small was picked off three times by the Gehlen secondary but threw for 112 yards and hit Blake Vande Hoef with an 11 yard TD-pass for the first score of the night.  Small added a 15 yard TD-run with 25 seconds to play before halftime for a 14-0 lead.  Blake Mossberg, Terrill Henrich and Joseph Hicklin scored on short runs in the second half for the Blackhawks.  Hinton's defense held Gehlen to 183 yards while scoring their second shutout of the season.  Solomon Freking was 8-for-14 passing for 52 yards and was intercepted twice.  Freking also ran for 53 yards on 25 carries.  Robbie Gunter led Gehlen's running attack with 65 yards on 17 carries.  Alex Kellen and D.J. Loutsch had three pass catches each.  Hinton's Blake Mossberg ran for 48 yards to lead a 159-yard  team rushing performance.  Hinton improves to 2-and-0 and will open district play next Friday at home against Ridge View.  Gehlen falls to 0-and-2 and will begin district play on the road next Friday, traveling to Paullina to play South O'Brien.  The game will be carried on KLEM.

HULL  -- Le Mars rallied  from a 7-6 deficit after three quarters with two fourth quarter touchdowns to hand Western Christian a 20-14 setback in Hull Friday night in non-district football action for the two Lakes Conference rivals.  Tyler Borchers hauled in a short pass on fourth-and-one from Koster Buss and turned it into a 60 yard, go-ahead touchdown with 10:20 to play.  Borchers had given the Bulldogs a 6-0 halftime lead with a diving catch of a deflected pass in the end zone on the final play of the first half.  Le Mars sealed the outcome with a ten-play, 67 yard drive that ate up 4:24 of the fourth quarter clock and Beau Ohm capped the drive with a three yard TD-run.  Tyler Paulsen threw a two-point conversion pass off a double reverse to Koster Buss to put the Bulldogs in front 20-7 with 3:26 to play.  The Wolfpack scored on a six-yard TD-pass from Tyson Kooima-to-Justin Horstman with 1:27 to play to trim the deficit to 20-14.  But Keaton Candor recovered the on-side kick for Le Mars and the Bulldogs were able to run the clock out.  Beau Ohm accounted for 108 of the Bulldogs' 124 yards on the ground on 33 carries.  Koster Buss finished 11-of-23 passing for 192 yards and two touchdowns.  He was intercepted once.  Tyler Borchers had seven pass catches for 157 yards.  Le Mars, now 1-and-1 for the season, opens district play next Friday against Storm Lake in the Bulldogs homecoming game.
