FRIDAY RESULTS – October 11

(HUMBOLDT) — Jaxon Heinz hit Austin Zylstra with a 22 yard scoring pass with six seconds to play to snap a 28-28 tie and rally Humboldt to a 35-28 victory over Le Mars Friday night in a non-district match-up in Humboldt. The Wildcats rattled off 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to erase a 28-13 deficit. Levi TeBrink and Chris Hatting hooked up on scoring passes of eight and 47 yards in the first half to help the Bulldogs take a 22-13 lead at halftime. Beau Ohm scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a seven yard run for a 15-point lead. The Bulldog defense had held standout Brady Ross in check for much of the first three quarters before he got loose on a 50 yard run in late in the third quarter to ignite a rally that started with his three yard run with 11:19 to play to narrow the deficit to 28-20. After a Bulldog center snap sailed over punter Chris Hatting’s head into the end zone for a safety the Wildcats had closed to within 28-22. A penalty on the play forced Le Mars to free kick from their own ten yard line, setting Humboldt up for the tying touchdown on a two yard run by Ross with 4:50 to play. The Wildcats missed the extra point to keep the game tied. A Bulldog fumble set up the winning score. Ross, a Division one prospect, finished with 204 yards on 32 carries for Humboldt. Beau Ohm ran for 132 yards on 28 carries for Le Mars. Levi TeBrink threw for 221 yards on 10-of-22 passing. Tyler Borchers caught four passes for 66 yards and Chris Hatting had three catches for 78 yards,. Le Mars slips to 2-and-5 for the season and returns to district play next Friday at Storm Lake.
(LE MARS) — Western Christian pulled away from a 14-14 halftime tie to beat Gehlen Catholic 36-21 Friday night in a Class 1A, district one match-up at Jim Lorenzen Field. Drew Van Sloten’s second touchdown run of the game, an eleven-yard jaunt in the third quarter, put the Wolfpack in front to stay. Daniel Van Maanen then fired an 82-yard scoring pass to Brady Van’t Hull for a 27-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Ethan Fenchel raced 42 yards for a clinching touchdown with 3:31 to play for a 33-14 lead. After Blake Wiltgen gave Gehlen a glimmer of hope with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Jentz with 2:17 left in the game, Justin Kamstra added a 30-yard field goal for Western to complete the scoring. Wiltgen threw an 11 yard TD-pass to Colton Kneip for Gehlen’s first score and added a two-yard run for a second quarter touchdown that put the Jays in front 14-7. A 27-yard Van Maanen-to-Fenchel TD pass on the final play of the first half sent the two teams to the halftime break tied. Wiltgen passed for 233 yards on 16-of-35 passing. Colton Kneip caught six passes for 96 yards. The Jays were limited to just 85 yards rushing by the Wolfpack. Gehlen slips to 3-and-4 for the season and 3-and-2 in district play. The Jays host winless Unity Christian next Friday in a non-district match-up that will conclude the home schedule for 2013 for Gehlen Catholic.

BOSTON – Anibal Sanchez combined with four relievers on a one-hitter as the Detroit Tigers downed the Boston Red Sox 1-0 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. The Tigers were within two outs of tossing the third no-hitter in postseason history until Daniel Nava singled in the bottom of the ninth. Jhonny Peralta had three of the Tigers’ nine hits, including an RBI single in the sixth for the game’s lone run.
ST. LOUIS – Michael Wacha (WAH’-kah) pitched into the seventh and combined with four relievers on a five-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. David Freese (freez) doubled in the fifth and came around to score the game’s lone run on Jon Jay’s sacrifice fly. Clayton Kershaw gave up just two hits and an unearned run for the Dodgers, who haven’t scored in 19 straight innings.

BOSTON – David Ortiz hit a game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning before Jarrod Saltalamacchia supplied a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox managed to even the American League Championship Series at a game apiece despite Max Scherzer, who took a no-hitter into the sixth and held Boston to two hits while striking out 13 in seven innings. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered for the Tigers, who host Game 3 on Tuesday.
