MONDAY RESULTS – May 26

(high school baseball)

Sioux City East 16, Le Mars 1, 4 innings

(SIOUX CITY)  — Sioux City East erupted for eight runs in the third inning as the Black Raiders routed Le Mars 16-1 on Memorial Day.  The game ended on Hayden Godfry’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning on the ‘Mercy Rule’.  Matt Ellefson scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning to stake Le Mars and starting pitcher Payton Pick to a 1-0 lead.  East erased the deficit with two runs in the second and broke the game open in the third.  Tennessee recruit, Jake Westphal limited the Le Mars bats to one hit while East got eleven hits off Payton Pick and took advantage of eight Bulldog errors.  Le Mars returns to action Wednesday at Sheldon.

(BOYDEN)  — Two former Spalding Catholic athletes led the way to victory on opening night as the Gehlen Catholic girls took advantage of 16 walks to beat Trinity Christian 13-0 in five innings Tuesday night in Boyden.  Sophomore Meghen Heying threw a one-hit shutout with seven walks and five strike outs while the Lady Jays played errorless defense behind her.  The only hit off Heying was a second inning single by Nicole Gritters.  Gehlen had only two hits, both by Paris Schroeder.  Schroeder’s two-run first inning single put Gehlen in front 4-0.  Schroeder also singled in the fifth.  The Tigers gave up four consecutive bases-loaded walks in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 11-0.  Gehlen plays host to defending 1A State champion Akron-Westfield Thursday night in their home opener.

(REMSEN)  — Morgan Cronin threw a shutout as Remsen St. Mary’s beat Hinton 5-0 Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference softball action in Remsen.

(ORANGE CITY)  — Kayla Tindall and Dana Hedlund combined on a season-opening no-hitter for the defending 1A State champion Akron-Westfield girls softball team as the Westerners beat Unity Christian 14-0 in five innings.  The two combined to strike out 11.

(LE MARS) — Gehlen Catholic pounded out 18 hits on opening night and routed Trinity Christian 17-0 in four innings Tuesday night in a War Eagle Conference baseball match-up at the Riverview Complex.  Jarod Steffes had three hits and drove in four runs on a pair of doubles and a triple.  Blake Wiltgen had three hits and three RBI’s.  Brady Heying smacked a grand slam in the third inning to key an eight-run inning.  It was his first career homer.  Lucas Hunt, Ty Kurth, Brady Heying and Mitchell Flack finished with two hits each.  Flack threw a two-hit shutout with one walk and nine strike outs.  Gehlen travels to Sibley-Ocheyedan Wednesday night.

(REMSEN) — Number-nine (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s clipped Hinton 2-1 Tuesday night in an early showdown of War Eagle Conference title contenders at the Remsen ballpark.  Brady Harpenau homered to right field in the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Hawks to a victory. The game featured a terrific pitcher’s duel between Matt Wesselmann and Logan Jurgensmeier.  Wesselmann scattered eight hits and struck out nine while Jurgensmeier finished with a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

(SIOUX CITY)  — After going 30-and-0 in the regular season in 2013, the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs opened the 2014 season with a 15-4 loss in five innings at Sioux City East.  Katy Miller’s grand slam in the fifth ended the game on the ten-run rule.  The Lady Raiders opened the game with six runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Madison Heidebrink and Holly Schneider had two RBI’s each for the Lady Bulldogs.

(SIBLEY)  — Brady Heying threw a two-hit shutout and Jared Steffes had three hits, all doubles, and three RBI’s to lead Gehlen Catholic (2-0) to a 14-0, five inning win over Sibley-Ocheyedan Wednesday night at Sibley.  The Jays broke the game open with nine runs in their final two at-bats.

(SHELDON) — Cameron Leff threw a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in his Bulldog pitching debut and Le Mars (1-1) won at Sheldon Wednesday night, 14-4 in five innings.  Leff also paced the Bulldogs offense with two hits and three RBI’s.  Leff transferred to Le Mars from Wichita, Kansas.  Dayton Rand had two hits and two RBI’s and Trevor Westhoff had two hits.  Colin Borchers had two RBI’s for Le Mars.

(LE MARS) — Top-rated Akron-Westfield took advantage of two errors and six walks in the final two innings to score seven runs, breaking up a 1-1 pitcher’s duel, and the Westerners topped Gehlen Catholic 8-1 in War Eagle Conference softball action at the Riverview Complex Thursday night.  Katie Johnson’s squeeze bunt put A-W in front 2-1 in the sixth and a second run scored when the throw to first base was off target.  The next batter, Jordan Hansen, laid down another bunt and again the throw was wild to first base, scoring a third run for a 4-1 lead going into the seventh.  The Westerners added four more runs in the seventh on five walks and a pair of hits.  Bailey Davis’s two-run single capped the scoring.  Kortney Hedlund drove in a first inning run on a ground out for a 1-0 Akron-Westfield lead.  Gehlen tied the game on Paris Schroeder’s single in the fourth.  Gehlen had only three hits against all-state pitcher Kayla Tindall, all in the fourth.  Tindall walked one and struck out 16.  Meghen Heying gave up just five hits but walked seven.  The Lady Jays slip to 1-and-1 for the season and 1-and-1 in the W-E-C.  Akron-Westfield, the defending Class 1A champions in Iowa, improve to 3-and-0.

(SHELDON) — Kassidy Rieken belted a two-run homer and pitched out of a seventh in jam to lead Le Mars to a wild 9-8 victory over Sheldon Thursday night in non-conference softball action at Sheldon.  Madison Heidebrink’s RBI single in the sixth inning put Le Mars in front 9-6.  Sheldon rallied for two runs in the seventh before Rieken snuffed out the rally with the tying run on first base.  Rieken scattered 12 hits with one walk and three strike outs.  Rieken homered in the third for the Lady Bulldogs first home run of the season.  Janessa Milbrodt led Le Mars’ nine-hit attack with three hits.  Holly Schneider had two hits and a RBI and Madison Heidebrink added two RBI’s.  The Lady Bulldogs improve to 1-and-1 for the season with the win.

(B) 1A STATE SINGLES & DOUBLES TOURNAMENT AT BYRNES PARK IN WATERLOO
(Le Mars’ doubles team of Matt Ellefson & Josh Sluiter won their first round match 7-6 with a 10-8 tie-breaker, 6-2 over a Glenwood doubles team (Cole Peckham & Max Chavez) but then lost in the second round 3-6, 1-6 to a doubles team from Fort Dodge St. Edmonds (Jimmy Averill & Konrad Laufersweiler).  The Le Mars team was then eliminated in the consolation bracket by a doubles team from Mt. Pleasant (Zach Schmitz & Tyler Pace) 2-6, 3-6.

(LE MARS) — West Sioux scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning Friday night to snap a 4-all tie and the Falcons claimed a 7-4 War Eagle Conference softball victory at Gehlen Catholic.  Gehlen took a 2-0 lead in the third but West Sioux tied the game in the fourth and went ahead 4-2 in the fifth with two more runs.  The Lady Jays tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with two runs.  Rylee Negaard had two RBI’s on two hits for the Falcons while Jill Kessenich, Taylor Peters and Paris Schroeder had two hits each for Gehlen.  The Lady Jays fall to 1-and-2 for the season and 1-and-2 in the W-E-C.

(SIOUX CITY) —The Le Mars girls split their first two games in the two-day Bishop Heelan softball invitational Friday.  Le Mars opened play with a 14-1 win over Sioux City North behind Kassidy Rieken’s three-hitter.  Madison Heidebrink paced a ten-hit attack with three hits and three RBI’s.  Lewis Central scored three runs in their last at-bat to snap a 1-all tie and the Titans clipped Le Mars 4-1.  Janessa Milbrodt threw a four-hitter for Le Mars with five strikeouts and four walks.  The Lady Dogs were limited to four hits themselves with Madison Heidebrink collecting two of the four hits.  Le Mars is 2-and-2 for the season.

(LE MARS) — Blake Wiltgen fired a four-hit shutout and struck out nine to pitch Gehlen Catholic (3-0/2-0) to a 10-0, six-inning victory over West Sioux Friday night at the Riverview Complex.  Mitchell Flack had a two-run single to key a four-run first inning and Ryan Stoll’s two-run single in the third led to another four-run inning.  Solomon Freking brought an end to the contest in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI-single to left, scoring Brady Heying from second base with the Jays’ tenth run.  Heying led a 15-hit Gehlen attack with four hits, a RBI and he scored twice.  Gehlen returns to action Monday at Hinton.

(LE MARS) — Robert Neustrom checked Le Mars to three hits and also had two RBI’s to lead Sioux City North to a 12-3 win at Le Mars Friday night.  The Stars roughed up Bulldog ace Colin Borchers for 12 hits and took advantage of five Le Mars’ errors.  The Bulldogs fall to 1-and-2 for the season and return to action Monday at home against Sioux City West.

2A at Livermore: Jay Small of Hinton finished 34th, shooting a 90 on the final day for a two-day total of 170.  South Hamilton won the team title and Trevor Ullestad of South Hamilton was medlaist with a 144.
3A at Ames: West Delaware won the team title with Alex Moorman of Centerville shooting a 143 to earn medalist honors.

(SIOUX CITY) — Le Mars finished play in the Bishop Heelan Softball Invitational Saturday, losing 7-6 to top-rated (3A) Sergeant Bluff-Luton.  The Warriors had to rally twice from 4-2 and 6-5 deficits to side-step the Lady Bulldogs upset bid.  S-B-L scored three runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead only to have Le Mars reclaim the lead at 6-5 on RBI singles by Holly Schneider and Madison Heidebrink.  Ashtin Hazel, whose two-run double in the fifth put the Warriors in front, delivered another two-run double in the sixth to put the Warriors in front to stay.  Le Mars got a base runner on board in the seventh with one out but couldn’t move her off first base.  Janessa Milbrodt threw a three-hitter in the opening game of the day to pitch Le Mars to a 7-3 win over Charter Oak-Ute.  Madison Heidebrink and Kassidy Rieken had back-to-back RBI doubles to key a three-run sixth inning to seal the outcome.  Heidebrink had four hits to lead a 13-hit attack.  The split left Le Mars at 3-and-3 for the season.

(KINGSLEY) — Gehlen Catholic took advantage of a shaky Sioux City West defense to score eight runs in the fourth inning and the Lady Jays went onto post a 9-1 victory over the Wolverines in the Kingsley-Pierson Softball Invitational Saturday.  West committed five errors in the decisive fourth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie.  Meghen Heying threw a three-hitter for the Lady Jays to earn the win.  Gehlen dropped their two late games Saturday night in the K-P Invite, losing 6-4 to the host school Kingsley-Pierson and 10-9 to River Valley.  Kingsley-Pierson took advantage of two Gehlen errors and a RBI single by Rachel Mercer to score two runs in the sixth, snapping a 4-all tie.  Marina Keck threw a three-hitter for the Panthers.  In the loss to River Valley, Gehlen blew a 7-0 lead as the Wolverines scored ten runs in their final two at-bats.  Meghen Heying had a one-hit shutout going through the first five inning for the Lady Jays before the wheels came off.  Bailey Wiltgen had three of Gehlen’s five hits, including the teams first home run of the season, and four RBI’s.  The Lady Jays are 2-and-4 for the season.
