The Akron-Westfield boys wrestling team competed at the Le Mars Invite on Saturday and came away with a 10th-place finish out of 20 teams.
The Westerners only brought six wrestlers for their varsity lineup so the end team result was not ultimately the focus. Akron-Westfield head coach John Sievert says his guys prioritized getting better individually against some good competition.
The Westerners did get an individual champion at 106 pounds with Cael Morrow beating an undefeated wrestler for the championship. Coach Sievert says he got out to a strong start in the first period of that match and did a good job hanging on for the win.
The Westerners also had two other wrestlers finish on the podium with Brodie Hoffman and Nathan Schoenfelder each placing third in their weight classes. Coach Sievert says both guys were a good example of his team needing to improve.
The Westerners are back in action tomorrow at a quad dual hosted by Hinton.
