Public meetings on firehouse bond issue set for Monday and Thursday
Public meetings will take place this upcoming week for the new firehouse bond issue that’s on the ballot for November’s elections.
On Monday, October 13th, and Thursday, October 16th, the Le Mars Fire-Rescue will host public meetings about the issue at Fire Station #1, located at 45 1st Avenue SW. Information about the issue will be given by the department, and the public is invited to comment and ask questions on the issue.
Fire-Rescue has proposed constructing a new firehouse due to outdated and overcrowded conditions at both stations in Le Mars. Fire chief Dave Schipper said during last month’s town hall meeting that current conditions have posed significant challenges to the operation of the department. The proposed bond issue will ask for $16 million at most for the new firehouse, although Schipper has said the final cost is expected to be lower than what’s being asked for.
The public meetings will take place this Monday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m., with election day on November 4th. For more information on the bond issue, click here.

Congressman Feenstra weighs in on shutdown
Friday was the 10th day of the shutdown of parts of the federal government, as the U.S. Senate remains deadlocked on passing a continuing resolution to fund operations. The U.S. House passed their version of the bill several days ago, and Iowa 4th district congressman Randy Feenstra says frustrations are growing over the Senate impasse.
He says with each passing day, more Iowans are being affected by the shutdown.
Feenstra reaffirmed that the trillion dollars plus in extended health care funding is not acceptable to Republicans, and that won’t be negotiated until the government reopens.
He calls the Democrats refusal to pass the necessary funding appalling. The U.S. Senate again failed to pass either the Democratic or Republican proposal on Thursday, and will not reconvene until next Tuesday, extending the shutdown through the weekend.
